Major earthquake hits Japan. Many UA flights diverted to various US (ANC) and Japanese cities (OKO, NGO, CTS...)

I'm sure they will, this just happened 2 hours ago so I'm sure waiver details haven't been worked out yet.

USGS just revised it to 8.9 Huge Earthquake shook for 2 minutes. Tsunami of 30 feet hit northern part of Japan, Sendai airport wiped out by tsunami. Some buildings of Tokyo with major structural damage. Both Tokyo airports shut down briefly, some runways re-open now but mainly priority for emergency medical/supply flights.

Tsunami warnings for neighboring countries in Taiwan, Philippines, etc.
Hawaii under Tsunami warning (upgrade from Tsunami watch)

I think it is too early to know. The earthquake is MAJOR and damages are widespread. Sendai airport is destroyed.

ANA's website: http://fli.ana.co.jp/fs/intenmenu - it is flooded right now but this is what was posted about 20 minutes ago:

March 11, 2011 16:35(JST)
///Earthquake in Japan(Northern part of Miyagi Pref.)///

Flights from/to some airports in Japan may be delayed, canceled, diverted, or return due to earthquake in Japan.

Please check schedule of your flight above "Flight".

The lines of ANA reservation center are busy now.
We apologize for any inconvenience.

My heart goes out to those effected by this quake and tsunami. Tsunami warning have been placed for Hawaii. This quake is an 8.9 and it is reported as one of the largest earthquakes of its kind. This information is subject to change as the night goes on.

Just tracking some random flights. Looks like UA837 has been re-routed several times, now into Yokota AFB (OKO); however when you try and get details nothing shows up.

A colleague is currently at Narita. He was schedule to fly home to SFO. People were evacuated from the terminal building and told to sit down outside on the ground while aftershocks rolled through. With incoming flights diverted, sounds it will be a long day/night for everyone.

HND is now open for arrivals only. NRT still closed. Looks like KIX is fine.

Not all true, UA 837 is on a US AF base somewhere west of Tokyo. Saw three or so other UA and CO jets, as well as AA, KLM, Delta.

Next to us is N786UA and another UA aircraft (can't see tail) as well as AA N799AN.

Also N78008 (?) - new livery 777.
