I'm 1K. Every time I'm on this flight (and I'll be on it again next week, starting from ORD), Y is full of package tourists (I think bucket shops in both SIN and HKG sell this tag flight for peanuts) and I get bumped to C. It's unreal, I'm 12/12 in the past two years. The HKG staff usually have my C BP ready to go at the gate and I even get GOOD C seats!
It could be that the overall load in E- is pretty full, but the bucket shop buyers may not have (or may not be able to) selected seats.
In fact, when I try to make a dummy booking, .bomb tells me I can't select a seat... cross your fingers!
Many times when E+ looks full it's because you are not logged in or the site lost your login. Logout and try again and the seats will probably show up.

Consolidators are widely used in Asia, so it's possible they've sold a lot of seats to people without seat assignments. They'll get their seats at checkin.
Has anyone ever encounter a situation where the E+ section is completely occupied whereas the E section is half empty?
This is happening on my UA896 SIN-HKG flight tomorrow 06Nov. I called UA and they confirmed all E+ seats taken and not as a result of blocking.
That is actually the norm for my SIN flying now .
And if it wasjust the HKG-SIN ... I had it numerous times on the HKG-SFO .
When I was recently downgraded by a malicious HKG GA from the last E+ aisle I could reserve 4 weeks out, I found myself in an empty E- cabin on the HKG-SIN hop ... so yes, it is normal.

How could you be downgraded? Is there no love for 1K's in HKG?
