Is middle seat next to a 1K blocked?

If there is a middle seat between a 1K and his wife is that seat blocked until it is needed. So the plane would have to be essentially full for that seat to be taken.

My brother is travelling with infant and I am wondering if I should give them two seats on teh side of the 777 or 2 of the 5 middle seats with and open seat betweeen them.

Not any more. And, assuming you're talking about E+, if the wife has no status, you can't do this anyway (your companion must sit in the adjacent seat).

No more seat blocking. And if the 777 trip you refer to is international I don't think there ever was seat blocking.

Plus, you post of giving seats to your brother? What's his status? Will you be traveling with him?

Not in my experience. I can put the no status Mrs. Ripper3785 anywhere in the E+ cabin when booking on .bomb. (and put her on the aisle of an empty 757 with me in the window). I don't know if the middle was blocked, and can't check now because our upgrades cleared.

You're lucky she didn't get swept, because the rules clearly say it has to be the adjacent seat.

My brotehr is the 1K. I am the no status. It is a 757 outbound to HNL, 777 on the return. Outbound I am hoping to grab aisle and window in an E+ row.

Side question. Brother and his wife have two purchased tickets JFK-LAX/SFO-HNL. I was able to get the infant an award from JFK to LAX and SFO-JFK but couldn't get the Cal. to HNL segments. How can I get UA to give me 3 E+ seats together. It would kind of suck if they all have to go to E-. Guess I should just call the 1K line and ask nicely. Do you think this will work?

Just hope there's no sweep, because if there is, the non-status person will get moved.

Purchase E+ Access for one of them.

Yes. A 1K can bring up to 8 people into E+ with him..technically all are supposed to be on the same PNR.. obviously in this case the infant is on a separate ticket since it was an award. I suspect reservations will do it once you explain the circumstances.

I wonder if this is still the case with the recent enhancement (yes, a real enhancement) that a 1K/GS can bring up to 8 others into E+ when on the same itinerary.

Edited to add: a lot of us hit on this quickly, I had the slowest typing, was looking for references the rules quoted.

You may be right. Under "priority services" (where it used to be), it no longer says the companion must be next to the elite. Of course, it also doesn't say that a 1K can take any companions into E+ (though it specifically does for 2P and 1P). That information is only on the 1K site.

Time to reset my brain...

Infant's award ticket is from my brother's (the 1K) miles. So that should automatically get him E+, now that I think about it. Correct?

I don't think so as they are on a separate PNR and infant has no status; you need to call. Before I had any status and used Mr. R's miles to book a ticket for me, I was not able to choose seats in E+.

E+ is based on the status of the traveler, not the status of the mileage source.
