Exclamation Purchase Elite Qualifying Miles / Segments !!

Not sure if this has been posted -- if yes, mods please close.

SO got this e-mail:

Dear XXXX XXXXXX,

We appreciate just how close you are to earning Premier® status for 2007, and we want you to be able to enjoy all the special benefits and privileges of elite status. That's why we're extending this special opportunity for you to secure your 2007 elite status.

Simply visit united.com/purchaseeqmeqs to check your 2006 EQM/EQS balance and register. To reach Premier status for 2007, purchase Elite Qualifying Miles (EQM) in 1,000-mile increments, up to 10,000, or Elite Qualifying Segments (EQS) in single increments up to 10, toward your 2006 EQM/EQS balance.*

With elite status, you'll get additional bonuses, recognition and membership privileges––including more ways to earn miles, more choices and more rewards than any other frequent flyer program.

Don't miss out on the chance to secure Premier status for 2007!
Going to this site gave her the option to purchase 1K EQM -- she was that close -- for $200.

I'll bet a lot of end-year mileage-runners will be a bit @&#%.

Oh, phooey. I was 13 EQS's from 1k, so I can't participate. Must be 10k miles or 10 EQS to qualify. Drat!

No, it's better to be sure than to depend on the vagaries of United marketing.

Just like last year, this offer only applies to 2P and 1P.

Looks to me like it only applies to 1P and 2P, not 1K.

I think by "1K EQM", the OP means "1,000 EQM", not "EQM required for 1K".

That's right... SO was under 1,000 EQM from 2P, and she got the offer.

So has anyone received this offer having missed 1K by under 1,000 EQM?

Perhaps so, but still, paying $200 to hit 1P vs. having to do a year-end MR is still pretty cushy.

When one logs on, there's a pull-down menu showing the prices which rise by a hundred dollars for every 1000 miles away from the target status. For my spouse who was 7K miles away (but will be gifted 3P) cost is -- $700!!! Whoa! Makes last fall's x2 EQS/EQMs cheap!!!

Seriously!

But my SO faces a dilemma. I gifted her 3P for 2007, so she gets E+ already. Basically, it's $200 to earn at best 12 500-certs this year, plus an extra 10k RDM. Close.

As a New York City 1K (who acheives this status on my own dimes) who has seen a steady erosion of flight/destination choices from JFK/EWR, I only had 42k BIS on UA last year.

With this mailing, they're offering me 1P status for $1000!

I could have, but didn't bother to take advantage of the double EQM offer last year for the bahksheesh price of $500, which would have given me 1P status for half the price.

Not a good deal for me, and I see no soft landing for this 1K to 1P.

Feh!

I got the offer, looks like a $100 base fee, then $100 / 1000 EQM or 1 segment.
I would need 6k, they want $700 for that.

My email said I'd have to pay $700. I sent Mileage Plus a nastygram detailing five separate instances where it would have been cheaper & easier for me to fly another airline other than UAL except that I wanted the miles to maintain my Premier status. Not sure whether it will do any good but I felt better afterwards. As I said in the e-mail to MP, loyalty cuts both ways.

One question -- will the flights I take on UAL later this month prior to the 2/10 cutoff apply to my EQM balance?

The 2/10 cutoff is only for this purchase promo option. Any flights you take from now until December 31 count for your 2007 total (i.e. 2008 status) only.
