IBM Thinkpad goes En Fuego in UA gate area at LAX

OK, who's T60 was this?

Looks like Terminal 8.

Mods: This may belong in another forum. However, since we're dealing with the UA gate area here, perhaps a UA FT'er bore witness?

According to the links posted, there was an LHR flight boarding next to it. So it would have either been the far end of terminal 6 or 7.

Very curious in that IBM batteries weren't listed for recall.

Let's hope this doesn't become an item that leads to laptops being forbidden on flights...

Looks like the gate 74 area to me.

Or..the 68's? Who knows...I'll take a better look around on Monday.

Not sure if it is a T60. But it's certainly a T40 or later with the battery "bar" in the back.

I have the market data for Notebook supplier relationships and Sanyo is the primary supplier of 18650 cells to IBM/Lenovo. However, Sony has emerged as second source.

My data indicates that Sony supplied ~20% of the cells in 2004-5. In 2003 MBI was the second source, so I sincerely hope that this was a late model and that the problems are isolated to Sony.

Funny you should say that but they made an annoucement on my VS flight JFK-LHR last week that Dells and Macs were not to be used in flight! I kid you not.

The pilot noticed me working on my Vaio TX670P and asked me how I liked it, etc. and then made that comment that I was lucky to be working on the Sony and not a Dell or Mac as he would have had to ask me to power down!!

Exclamation IBM Laptop catches fire during boarding in LAX on UA flight to LHR

http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/lapto...lax-201115.php

"So we're waiting for a flight in the United lounge at LAX, the flight next to ours was heading to London and in the middle of final boarding, when suddenly this guy comes running the wrong way up the jetway, pushing other boarding passengers out of the way, he quickly drops his laptop on the floor and the thing immediately flares up like a giant firework for about 15 seconds, then catches fire. About a hundred other people in the lounge jumped up and began a mix of gawking and general panic, I clearly heard a few fleeing individuals saying something about terrorists. The fire burned for a minute while everybody just stared at it, then another flare up, this one much larger than the first, drove a larger group of gawkers away. Eventually, the high intensity flaring calmed down and a larger fire kicked in, all the while letting off a thick cloud of white smoke that was slowly filling the terminal. Finally, an employee came over with a fire extinguisher and put it out of its misery."

Any FTer present when this happened?

I was told IBM uses Sony batteries as well but do not know if this particular laptop was using a Sony battery at the time.

Whoops - dupe post - Mods please combine and close, thanks!

Given the existing ban on use of Apple and Dell computers on some airlines, I have to believe that this story may lead to the end of the use of all laptops on board. (While using batteries that is.)

The rules now (batteries out while plugged in) are good at causing the immediate loss of work and data, since when the plug is disconnected the computer immediately dies (dies with prejudice, that is).

Perhaps there is a market for lower-storage non Li-ion batteries for computers. These would be used in flight while using power ports. Even if these batteries give just 10 minutes of power, they would prevent immediate power loss.

Actually, though, I'm ambivalent. An excuse not to work on the plane has significant positive implications as well (although there is no way I will check my computer).

Are there rules in place now restricting use/carry on of laptops?
If there are...I missed it.

Looks like a T43 to me.

I have a T42p and I see differences, which of course does make me feel better.

A Thinkpad doing this of course doesn't make me feel very happy...Dell why not, but a Thinkpad....
