Looks like it diverted to SFO and had a scheduled stop in ANC, but that was cancelled. Two weeks ago I was on 890 (NRT-LAX) and we had engine problems and a stop was scheduled for HNL but that was cancelled and we went to LAX as scheduled, 5 hours late. Seems like a similar situation.

PHL ORD 07:45 09:08 09:02 10:14 OPERATIONS
ORD SFO 747 12:15 13:18 18:10 DVRT OPERATIONS
SFO ANC 747 19:30 DVRT NSTP OPERATIONS
ANC HKG 747 NSTP 18:05 01:50 OPERATIONS
HKG SIN 747 20:10 On Time 23:55 23:45 OPERATIONS
Actual time in orange
Estimated time in blue

NSTP = No Stop
DVRT = Divert

Thanks, missed his link.

Wow. Well, I can't imagine it was a health issue, because they could have diverted any number of places with great medical care other than SFO, same for a homeland secuirty issue: they would have landed in as isolated an area as possible and not flown a 747 loaded with fuel back to a major metro area.

I guess they wanted SFO mechanics to look at something that wasn't immediately threatening.

This is odd - FLIFO doesn't show that it diverted at all.

Cool new flight tracker

Well, I've always wanted UA to run an evening flight to HKG.

Yeah seriously...that would be nice to have flights to Asia that don't arrive at midnight.

It's back in the air and will land in HKG about 9 hours later than originally planned. Still no answer to the reason for the diversion.

Yeah an Asia flight leaving SFO near midnight like most of the Asian carriers would be nice.

This also happened on August 1st.
I would LOVE to know if this is an actual 'emergency' or just UA filling up an empty plane with bums at the expense of Chicago boarding passengers. Not due to land in Hong Kong until 3 a.m.
Ouch.

8/19/12 UA895 diversion discussed starting here:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/19153324-post420.html

Apparently it was a pre-scheduled fuel stop:

Status: Arrived Gate 5 Minutes Late - Diverted to San Francisco, CA (SFO) (Diverted - Planned fuel stop)
