Smallest Cushion to Earn 2P, 1P, 1K

Due to a slight mistake on my part about the number of EQMs I would earn for a CO codeshare on Gulfstream Air (no 500 min), it looks like my currently scheduled flying will result in 1P with 50,015 EQMs by the end of the year. Cutting it that close got me thinking about the number of miles others have cleared a status tier with. I was curious about how many people have purposely ended a year with only a few miles as a cushion. Anyone hit it right on the button?

Not me but a coworker

Last year I had a coworker sitting at 99,003 on December 29th, so he did a quick morning $171 run to MSP-ORD and back on New Years Eve to take advantage of 500 mile minimums and make it 100,003 and get his 1K.

True story. When I made 1K a few years back, I was at 99,999 EQMs toward the end of my travels. I ended up making 1K only because of the 5k EQM Chase bonus and finished out at 104,999.

Had it not been for the Chase bonus, I always wondered what Customer Service would have said had I called them up and asked for an exception ...

I made 1P a few years ago w/ 50,003 miles, and that took 3x calls to MP CS--irrops had trashed my last itin of the year, and I wanted the original routing credit (normally not a problem--bad luck in which CSRs I spoke to, I guess). Finally got the infamous "one-time exception."

If it weren't for irrops Y "bonus" on a SAN-LAX segment earlier this fall, I'd be making 1K with 100,047 EQM. I've a little bit more of a cushion thanks to that Y segment's extra 250 EQM.

In the 1K thread, someone reported 100,009 this year.

I would have made it with 100,033, except for a full Y rebooking that will bump that to 100,283. A few years ago, I was going to end at 99,995, but took an AKL-WLG flight just to ensure it.

This gets me to asking the following question:

Is it a big disadvantage to reach 1K by a minimal amount of EQM's? I figure, if I'm over by just a few miles, then that leaves me at the BOTTOM of the list for 1K's being upgraded.

Or are there many other factors that minimize the importance of my EQM balance from the previous year. Is the qualifying year's EQM balance even considered for UDUs , etc.?

Aloha

Upgrade list isn't determined by how many miles (EQM) you have above the elite thresholds.

Though a great many GAs seem to think it is, and love to spread that "fact".

This is may a stupid question, and I haven't searched...how do you get a .5 segment?

I will retain 2P with exactly 30 EQS. Cutting it pretty close, lol.

Last year I was surprised to be upgraded to 1k @ 96k miles in November.

I'm pretty sure that's from class of service bonuses.

Thanks! I felt a little silly asking. Learning new stuff everyday.

Correct.

Booked into full Y (which has a 50% EQS/EQM bonus) in an irrops situation.
