Next month this plane will be 10 years old, not bad, compare to the oldest 744 in UA (N171UA) is almost 20 years old.

The new livery was rolled out 2/18/04. But that's still 5 years. I think DL is aiming to have all planes repainted by end of 2012, and they started in 2007.

Back on topic.. the 747 looks good!

I was on this HKG-SIN leg on Friday night too, in C. N121UA operated the ORD-HKG not SFO-HKG sector though, as I came in on SFO-HKG and we parked next to the *A livery bird.

And I seem to still get about 90% battleship grey on my flights (mostly transpac).

for the other extreme, I haven't seen any America West paintjobs since about 18 months after their merger with US.

How are aircraft painted in *A livery referred to by air traffic controllers? "UAxxx" or something that alludes to the tail design?

Air traffic controllers don't care how the plane is painted; they only care about the callsign. For commercial flights, 99.9% of the time, that's the airline and flight number (for example, "United 901").

I'd say the answer is yes and no.

For example, NW planes are now being repainted into DL colors, even though the two airlines have not yet obtained a single operating certificate under Delta.

Until then, NW-registered airplanes retain the "NORTHWEST" callsign regardless of what livery they are wearing, and air traffic controllers, at least in the U.S., now call out "NORTHWEST 123 in Delta colors" as standard to avoid confusion.

Furthermore, sometimes certain controllers like saying "Lufthansa 456, follow the United Star Alliance 747..."

At which time they can start over as some of the "newly painted" 744's are already peeling/missing paint.

I agree, it looks a little "odd" with the darker tail fin.

Matching nose cones and/or engine cowlings can't be a huge concern within the fleet as its not uncommon to see planes with mismatched parts.

Neat I guess, but the huge UNITED on the side isn't enough?

The plane looks nice, even with the blue engines.

Obviously it isn't, SQ *A livery planes actually has the SQ logo on the tail fin instead of the Star logo.

The UNITED looks a lot larger when on the side of the UA Star 767 that I rode for travels to Europe last week.
