Help... What is a V Class Ticket?

A friend of mine had to cancel a ticket to Ireland that he had purchased for his wife.

The TA says the funds ticket can only be credited for United International Tickets, not domestic.

I am a DL and FL flier so I am not at all familiar with UA policies.

Ticket info was

V class is usually free or deeply discounted, which would make sense if this was some kind of special.

Here's a great thread from the FAQ that covers all of the fare buckets...

United Airlines Booking Codes Thread (OzStamps Booking Code thread):
Thread listing all known UA revenue and award booking codes and a summary of each one

Free?

It's a regular booking class, just above W.

V is not free or deeply discounted. Free ticket is XY, deeply discounted is usually T or L.

Looks like a mixed metal ticket, with EI for the short legs.

We'd have to see a printout of the fare rules for VHXANGE to be able to advise on crediting a canceled ticket. Things have changed on many of the lower fare buckets in the last year.

As a sample, here is the penalty verbage from a ORD-LON VLWANGE fare:

Quote:
PENALTIES
UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED CANCELLATIONS ANY TIME TICKET IS NON-REFUNDABLE. WAIVED FOR SCHEDULE CHANGE/ILLNESS OR DEATH OF PASSENGER OR FAMILY MEMBER. NOTE - A. DEATH/ILLNESS PROVISION -- TICKET MAY BE REFUNDED OR USED TOWARD PURCHASE OF ANOTHER TICKET DUE TO ILLNESS OR DEATH OF PASSENGER OR TRAVELLING COMPANION. VALID MEDICAL / DEATH CERTIFICATE REQUIRED. -- B. EXCHANGE - CHANGE TO 1ST TICKETED FLIGHT / WHOLLY UNUSED TICKET -- UPON PAYMENT OF CHANGE FEE - FULL VALUE MAY BE APPLIED TOWARD PURCHASE OF NEW TICKET PRICED AT EQUAL TO OR HIGHER CURRENT FARE LEVELS - CHANGE FEE/DIFFERENCE IN FARE/TAX TO BE COLLECTED AT TIME OF EXCHANGE. -- THE NEW ITINERARY MAY BE BOOKED UP TO ONE YEAR FROM ORIGINAL TICKET ISSUE DATE. -- THE NON-REFUNDABLE AMOUNT REMAINS NON-REFUNDABLE CARRIED FORWARD TO THE ENDORSEMENT BOX OF NEW TICKET. CHANGES ANY TIME CHARGE USD 200.00 FOR REISSUE/REVALIDATION. CHILD/INFANT DISCOUNTS APPLY. NOTE - A. CHANGES MADE TO OTHER THAN THE FIRST TICKETED FLIGHT -- THE FARE LEVELS IN EFFECT AT THE TIME OF ORIGINAL TICKET ISSUE WILL APPLY - ALL PROVISIONS OF ORIGINALLY TICKETED FARE APPLY. IF THE NEW ITINERARY QUALIFIES FOR THE ORIGINAL TICKETED FARE BUT RESULTS IN A HIGHER FARE - COLLECT THE CHANGE FEE AND FARE DIFFERENCE /OR/ RESULTS IN A LOWER FARE -COLLECT THE CHANGE FEE AND REFUND THE DIFFERENCE TO A NON-REFUNDABLE VOUCHER VALID ON UNITED ONLY AT TIME OF REISSUE. THIS APPLICATION APPLIES - BEFORE TRAVEL BEGINS. ONCE TRAVEL BEGINS - TICKET IS NON-REFUNDABLE. -- CHANGE MADE TO OTHER THAN THE FIRST TICKETED FLIGHT RESULT IN THE NEW ITINERARY NO LONGER QUALIFYING FOR THE ORIGINAL TICKETED FARE - THE FULL VALUE MAY BE APPLIED TOWARD AN EQUAL OR HIGHER QUALIFYING FARE - USING FARES IN EFFECT OF THE ORIGINAL TICKET DATE UPON PAYMENT OF FARE/TAX DIFFERANCE AND CHANGE FEE. --
The travel agent will have access to the correct fare rules for your friend's ticket.

Thanks... V is deeply discounted with a lot of restrictions. I have just never heard of that kind of a restriction. limiting the credit to other international flights.....
