I'm considering flying HKG-SFO on 12/2.
Currently UA838 (the earlier NRT-SFO flight) is showing: F6, FN6, A5, ON5, O0, J9, JN9, C9, D9, Z9, ZN9, P9, PN0, R0, RN0, IN0, I0, Y9, YN9, B9, M9, E9, U9, H9, HN9, Q9, V9, W9, S9, T0, L0, K0, G0, N0, XN0, X0, with 15 empty seats in the business class cabin.
UA852 (the later NRT-SFO flight) is showing: F2, FN2, A0, ON0, O0, J9, JN9, C9, D9, Z9, ZN9, P9, PN3, R3, RN3, IN0, I0, Y9, YN9, B9, M9, E9, U9, H9, HN9, Q9, V9, W9, S9, T9, L9, K9, G0, N0, XN0, X0 , with 24 empty seats in business class.
UA862 (the HKG-SFO nonstop) is showing: F9, FN9, A7, ON7, O0, J9, JN9, C9, D9, Z9, ZN9, P9, PN9, R0, RN0, IN0, I0, Y9, YN9, B9, M9, E9, U9, H9, HN9, Q9, V9, W9, S9, T9, L9, K0, G0, N0, XN0, X0, with 27 empty seats in business class.
The nonstop flight is obviously preferable, or failing that, the earlier NRT-SFO flight, but would I be foolish to book either while there's confirmable R space?

I'd cross 838 off the list. Between 852 and 862 it's just a question of risk tolerance

Found a ton of seats the weekend/and few days before Thanksgiving. Decided to do EWR-HKG since it's lots of miles, $744 in W class

sorry to drudge up and old thread, but I have a question on the upgrade chances on HKG-SIN and SIN-HKG.
It's operated by a 772 and the list of people upgraded seems VERY long, which makes sense because there are ALOT of business seats for this flight.
However, the schedule of this flight is GOD awful... 1 am arrival to SIN and 545 am departure from SIN.
However, I may want to do it because it's only $235 all in r/t and it seems like a better deal. Cathay has a sale for a similar price with a better sked, but the UA business seems like a shoein as premier gold.... I can't seem to imagine THAT many elites on this flight, but let me know if i'm wrong!

i've got a family of 4 nonstop HKG-SFO booked all the way out in July 2014 (W fare).
no immediate R space, but they've sold no C tickets as of yet.
thinking about trying to change it to route thru NRT where NRT-SFO does have R space, but would likely have to pay at least $300 per person ($1200) to do the change.
bets on whether or not R space will open up strictly because it's so far out?

Highest Probability of Upgrading from HKG
Greetings,
I am based in Boston and have a choice of flying home from HKG via either SFO, ORD or EWR.
Would anyone have insight into which of these three flights have a historically higher probability of clearing an upgrade wait list using a Global Premier Upgrade instrument?
Thanks
koppelman

Not ORD.
Your best bet is on a flight that has R at booking.
If you can't confirm at booking, you may want to keep in mind that the sCO 772 on the EWR route has a much better Y cabin than SFO's 744.

IMO EWR now the best option, esp. if you're flying when the CX flight has started operating

My recent experience, EWR-HKG, Friday, plat, B fare, cleared after being seated (misconnect apparently). HKG-ORD, Wednesday, plat, B fare, #1 on wait list, and a non-rev cleared into F instead of them Op-uping a C passenger, which would have put me in.

It obviously is going to vary from flight to flight, but I've watched the HKG flights quite a bit over the past eight months (while confirming four SFO-HKG GPUs), and ORD is on the whole definitely tougher than SFO. I don't think I've seen open R for ORD even once; it does open for SFO from time to time.

I've had good luck with HKG lately. A couple of months ago, I purchased a one-way W fare ORD-HKG (via SFO, flt 869) for $745 for travel on January 14, and my GPU cleared almost immediately on both segments. I was also successful upgrading UA895 ORD-HKG-SIN with miles in January, but I did purchase the ticket (S fare) and the award about six months in advance.
So, even though it depends on the day, it's not an impossible upgrade to HKG by any means.
