Award redemption changes coming Nov. 1, 2017
http://mileageplusupdates.com/ (Thanks @joelfreak for providing link.)
  • Standard awards being replaced by "EveryDay Award" -- variable pricing
  • Some increases in longer haul international premium cabin saver awards (Generally 10% or less if any at all)
  • Some decreases on shorter non-stop partner saver flights outside the US
  • No changes for North America saver economy
  • No-show award redeposit fee $125 -- for everyone, no elite exemption.
  • Round the World awards are gone
  • No changes in UA/UX/Copa or *A mileage upgrades
*NEW* November 1, 2017 award chart

TPG has some tables showing changes to redemption costs.

What if I need to change my existing Standard Award on or after November 1, 2017?

Any changes will require a ticket reissue and new pricing and additional fees may apply.

Partner redemptions have similar increases...

Looks like Saver Awards in J or F from NY/Newark, ORD, IAH, IAD to Hawaii just got jacked! Now 50K miles each way in J (was 40K) to Hawaii and 55K (was 50K) each way in F. Also Standard to Everyday Awards from those locations get jacked as well from 90K to 95K in J and from 102.5K to 115K in F! Standard Award to Everyday Awards stays the same in J for the West Coast at 90K, but goes up to 110K (from 102.5K) for F!

Regards,

RIP...

Between getting 50% more points on travel with the Sapphire Reserve and a massive amount more with the switch to revenue based RDM, I can't be too upset with a modest increase in the # of miles for saver J redemptions.

When I saw the headline I was expecting much worse.

Dynamic pricing allows for award prices that fall in-between.
Yeah, I mean it's easy to slag on the Sky Peso out of habit, but when I was searching DL round trip coach US-EU earlier this year, while 60K availability was often with bad routings, I was finding a ton of good flight options at 70K, which sure beats going straight to anytime award price doubling once the cheap miles seats get snapped up.

Was bracing for the worst, but this isn't that bad. One ways to Japan in J increased from 65k to 70k, and partner J (ANA) from 75k to 80k.

Not a good thing to be sure but better than some other devaluations.

Did they just raise these Everyday awards or also Saver awards?

Or both?

Or are people anticipating dynamic pricing of Saver awards soon?

I guess it could be worse, but United's really not doing themselves any favours this year in terms of attracting people to it&the program.

.

Everyday awards are like AA's AAnytime awards. dynamic with a cap. Savers went up through the board for a bit too, but won't be dynamic and I wouldn't expect this. this essentially just emulates AA.

This has Scott Kirby's fingerprints all over it.

No-show fee of $125, regardless of status, is reasonable.

As an economy-class flyer, I'm not unhappy about this. The <800mi intra-EU flights for 8k might interest me. The only J award I might have been interested in was the 30k South Asia to Australia, so it's a shame to see that go. But as devals go, I'm not crying over this one.

while I am ok with the no show fee, award prices went up on economy saver awards as well.

Inter Island Hawaii went from 6k to 7K.

Some may argue that the cost to the airlines is going up, but remember the cost to obtain miles has also increased especially when they went to RDM based on spend. This is an increase where the novice flyer already had to to spend $5k just for the chance at getting a domestic saver R/T ticket.

I just felt the pot getting warmer....ribbit ribbit!

Not terrible, but my guess is we will continue to see yearly devaluations going forward. .

Yet another customer-unfriendly devaluation from an industry cartel kingpin.

What's the objective, UA, to be as bad as or worse than AA and DL?

The no-show fee is fine, I think that's reasonable.

I don't like the "everyday pricing" but at least thus far, its not egregious and punitive like AA and DL. I was fearing MP would go to the 1c or less per point, and so far we haven't seen that.

I'm pretty much expecting that this UA devaluation will mean reduced opportunities to redeem partner airline program miles/points for award travel seats on UA planes.
