your best chance is SDC and paying the fee in that case I guess w/o status. SDC often allows strange routings and I would not be surprised if it offered the flight back as 2 segments if P is available on both.
You can't break that flight in the middle (in SFO). Ask in LAX at check-in and see if they do it for you or not.

Do the advance purchase requirements for P fares on these routes require at least 30 days?

No. There are UP/UPDI fares with 21, 14, 7, 3, and 0 day AP requirements.

There are 21, 14, and 7-day P fares and a relatively cheap 3-day Z fare. I suspect this will be like EWR where they start out matching B6's amazing price and slowly give up until the only reasonable prices are 21-30 days out.

I haven't seen any of these shorter notice P fares on LAX-EWR. You must be referring to the SFO-BOS route or else I may be missing these shorter notice fares out of LAX. Thanks.

Correct - was talking about SFO-BOS. My apologies if I missed what the topic of conversation was. The EWR-SFO/LAX market started out like that and over the course of a year or two after B6 debuted Mint, they rolled it back to only 30- and 21-day fares being less than $1,000.

ok, thanks. So it sounds like there are many more short notice discounted options on the BOS route. LAX-EWR seems much more difficult, but now I understand. Thanks again.

From my experience, once you pass the 21 day advance purchase limit, the fares jump much higher to at least $1500 or more between LAX and EWR. Does anyone else have any other experience with this? Thanks.

It wasn't that long ago (w/in last 5 years) $3400 was the cheapest RT business class fare SFO-JFK.

Indeed. Who knows if they’re making any money, but these sub-$1,500 are fantastic. Not cheap, but totally worth it IMO.

The 30-day P and Saturday Z adv pur fares are just about equivalent to those for Hawaii from West Coast on a 738 in F. I'd say they are a deal. I'd even call 'em "cheap", w/ Club access (for those who otherwise don't get it) and better meals, and lie-flats. UA obviously would rather have business travelers booking within 2 weeks of departure...

This is interesting. Even day of flight, with a single F seat left, I've only ever seen the D $2640 D fare EWR-LAX, never either of the J fares. And EWR-SFO, also day of flight with a single F seat left, I've only ever seen the $3199 J fare. I've never ever seen the $9938 J fare. Maybe if you show up five minutes before the doors close to buy a ticket?

The $9,938 fare is only ever used for internal purposes (e.g. possibly used to apportion IDB comp, PQD, etc). The J fare (JUA) is, as you noted, used from time to time but last seat D space is extremely common.

If anyone ever paid that near $10,000 OW domestic (!) fare with any sort of regularity, he/she will be a GS in no time flat!!
