Kids can definitely have elite status. Mine only got to about gold, not 1k (!), but it happens. They'll also get plenty of: UA credit card solicitations, vacation package offers, and requests to bid on flight simulator sessions ;-)
That said, as others have said when they share names with parents, there will be raised eyebrows. Luckily, we tend to fly together and they see all of us as one party with status and assume its good. But there will sometimes be questions.

There are many not just "kids" but toddlers with elite status. If you read the T&C of the MP program, you won't see any age limitation.
Think taking your 2 YOA in paid F/J to Asia twice a year and you will see how easily status is earned.

The only real requirement to status is a mileage plus account, which my son has had since 7 months and my daughter since 2.
Mine are in no way up there in status, but you need it to enter credentials like global entry KTN and passport data to get boarding passes online etc

As everyone pointed out, it is absolutely possible. I'll just add that United doesn't send silver cards out any more, just luggage tags. So aim for gold if you want your kid to get a kick out of having his own card.

Kids of any age can have FF accounts and elite status on UA and most but not all airlines. Some programs have age restrictions and at least one has a separate version of a FF program for kids, but these are generally foreign airlines.
