My attempt: United, rising.

I feel like either 'common sense' or 'do the right thing' must be in there somewhere

I think before UA can truly improve their customer experience, they need to end the pmUA v pmCO divide, which is very apparent. They are not united at all.

Given United's oh so typically casual response to being OT I am just experiencing (boarding 17 minutes late with a plane there for a long time before the fight) just pushed to 10 minute late departure, and 6 min late arrival into EWR, I'm going with:

"Schedule? We don't need no stink'n schedule"

-edit, turns out to be a maintenance issue on our brand new 777-300ER.
- further edit: While the pilot told us it was a "maintenance issue" Just got an e-mail from United saying we are 20 minutes delayed due to "operations"
- further update: But fear not! While my SFO-EWR is now delayed by 35 minutes, my EWR-DCA is now delayed 33 minutes due to "awaiting aircraft"

"Never fear flying United, your connecting flight will be late too"

I still think "Fly the Fiendly Skies" is brilliant (and, by the way, "fiendly" is a real word!), but turning serious for a moment

This.

What United needs is a slogan that says "We messed up and we're working to earn back your trust and restore our reputation" - without actually saying that, of course.

I'm not sure there is such a slogan. I'm not really sure ANY slogan would help them much at this point. I think the three legacy carriers are sort of at the point where the Detroit 3 automakers were a number of years ago: their products aren't all that great, or really very distinguishable from each other. This applies to the casual flyer, anyway.

Maybe they will settle on some insipid, generic slogan like

"Come Fly With Us" (another oldie)

"Flights of Fancy"

"Far and Above"

"Far and Away"

Frankly, I'd guess front-of-the-plane and frequent flyers don't need a slogan, and infrequent flyers don't pay much attention to them, so why bother? (And how many slogans do you actually remember?)

If actually meeting the facts (which the 2015 re-use of "friendly skies" did not) they are useful to set a brand. I think "delta raising" has worked very well for them, and the general brand spots (showing an airplane taking off) are very well done.

Advertising at this time is a waste of $$$. Best to save it for a brand relaunch.
