Air New Zealand service between Auckland and Chicago

From Nov. 30, 2018, Air New Zealand will operate three times weekly, year-round service with its new configuration Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Flight time will be approximately 15 hours northbound and just over 16 hours southbound. Air New Zealand code share service will be offered on around 100 flights across the U.S. for convenient connections to Auckland via Chicago. United Airlines operates more flights from its hub at O'Hare International Airport than any other airline, with more than 500 flights to 147 airports across the United States.

United expands service between San Francisco and Auckland

Beginning in April 2019, United will extend service between its West Coast hub in San Francisco and Auckland to year-round with three-times-weekly service. In partnership with Air New Zealand, United's flight arriving in Auckland will offer passengers more than 20 connections across the region. The return trip utilizes United's extensive route network in San Francisco, which provides connections to the United States, Canada, and Latin America. United operates more than 290 daily flights from its hub at San Francisco International Airport to 79 airports across the U.S. and 26 international destinations. Tickets for the expanded San Francisco schedule will be available on united.com and airnewzealand.com later this year.

United service between San Francisco and Auckland will operate with a Boeing 777-300ER between November and March and will operate with Boeing 777-200ER aircraft between April and October.

United Airlines suspends NZ service (Suspension Period: April 18, 2017 - October 30, 2017)

Per New Zealand Herald quoting UA:

This change is in response to seasonal variations, which will also see United Airlines adding an additional three flights per week starting December 18, 2017 after resuming its daily Auckland to San Francisco services on October 31, 2017. This will increase services to a total of 10 United's flights per week during the high seasonal demand period. Passengers who have already purchased tickets during the suspended period are being contacted by the airline and offered flights on the Air New Zealand service instead. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience and advise that customers will not be out of pocket as a result of this shift in scheduling and will retain all frequent flyer benefits."

Looks like earnings are matching other JV partners now. Discounted fares will earn 100% PQM now. https://www.united.com/cms/en-us/mar...spx?itemid=379

That's excellent. The previous rules were a complete mess, and UA did not even follow the rules they had posted for 016 stock. Glad to see it is far more simplified.

Finally! Looks like all flights will have the same earnings, even the trans-Tasman hops. Best news I've heard all year.

Confused

I am trying to book from AKL to ORD

But I am confused by the PQM earn rate.

IF I choose the Air NZ flight it shows me a earn rate of 10208 but if I choose the UA metal it shows 16724. This is on the UAL website for business class.

The tables show its 200% for Business/Discount business. I wasted time trying to call. I figured you guys would be help me out me then a UA agent.

Thanks in advance

The table for NZ changed quite recently, and the website display has never been accurate. It should be 2x the distance of PQM regardless of UA or NZ metal.

Great change, my "S" class domestic flights on NZ this month are reflecting new PQM and PQS!

Wow, what a bummer. I bought a biz ticket for myself and an awards ticket for my wife for next Feb and I'm not at all happy with this change. It also looks like the price for the biz ticket has dropped by $690.

United Flights in early 2017 from SFO to AKL

I have looked ahead at the flights offered in early March from SFO to AKL and return. They were all on 777-200 aircraft. I have just done this route on a Dreamliner (800). Does anyone know why they are shifting?

UA on a 777 has a horrendous business class (2-4-2 configuration). On the Dreamliner it is 2-2-2 and is not bad. Air NZ is still better, but infinitely better than flying on United 777 bus class, it is not even close. The United int'l experience in bus class on the 777 is very substandard.

Any intelligence on what is going on? Why have they switched to 777 on that route in the future?

One more question: where is the United Counter for check-in in Auckland Int'l Terminal? How far ahead of the 1:30 pm departure (AKL-SFO) does the counter open?

Thanks and Kiaora!

There have been rumours of the SFO-AKL being one of the first new Polaris (i.e. 777-300) routes, maybe they'll be switching it to that at some point, since those planes will be arriving at the end of this year (not 100% sure about that though)? And the 772 might be the closest placeholder.

// Edit: maybe not though, since the 772 has first, and the 773 won't...

Unfortunately the 772 is not a place holder there has been a aircraft switch for the summer season - I have just returned on the 787 and very disappointed to see my Dec and Jan trips switched to 772. Have read the rumors with regard to the 773 wouldn't be holding my breath on that happening! Think the counter opens 2 hours before - not 100% sure as I'm alway running late...

quote from United W16 International Operations Changes:: Routesonline
"San Francisco – Auckland Planned service increase from 3 weekly to 1 daily unchanged, however from 30OCT16 service operates with 3-class 777-200ER. Planned 787-9 operation postponed until 28FEB17"

I believe they are up-gauging it for capacity. The 772 flies more Y seats. I have also heard the rumor that SFO-AKL will see the Polaris 773 next year, but I definitely wouldn't count on it, especially as early as March.

If I recall though, the JV means that you can fly NZ J for the same price.

I have flights in April which both appear to be on a 787-900. I'm going to keep an eagle eye on them, just to make sure I don't get switched to the center devil's coffin seats on a 777-200.
