UA "wingtip" flights ORD-SFO, 700 seats in 30 min

This morning I noticed that UA has three flights within a half hour on ORD-SFO.

Flights are:
UA 761 08:55 753
UA 769 09:17 753
UA 547 09:25 772

That is almost 700 seats in a half hour, then nothing until 12:30. I know that ~9am is a big bank for UA in ORD and those will connect to some of the Asian departures like TPE, but wouldn't it make more sense to spread those out a little, even for airspace separation? I know markets like ORD-DCA and ORD-LGA they try to keep them spaced an hour apart, so why not for ORD-SFO as well?

Do DL or AA run "wingtips" like this on their hub to hub markets as well?

The 753's need to be in SFO to fly onwards to the Hawaiian islands.

The 772 needs to be in SFO to do a TPAC.

It's all about aircraft rotations.

Not as extreme but AA will schedule some ORD-DFW flights within 30 minutes of each other but then there maybe a gap of 90 minutes and then repeat ... I assume this is to align to flight banks at both airports

Excellent question. As all 3 flights are too late for Pacific connections except for an ANA and Asiana flight, why the need to space them so close?

I know that United has a good reason, just wonder what it actually is?

Whatever it is, it's probably more to do with convenience for UA, rather than for its customers.

Yep, AA runs a 772 at 610pm DFW-ORD followed by a 788 at 7pm on weeknights.
