UA Applies for Haneda slots: SFO/EWR
The DoT is requiring all airlines to reapply for Haneda service with the shift to daytime slots. UA has applied to keep its SFO service and add EWR as well.
I think that EWR has a very strong chance of winning the extra slot given the NYC-esque nature of the hub.
DL applied for ATL/MSP/LAX. AA for LAX/DFW. HA for HNL/KOA with the twist that the second frequency would be 3x KOA/4x HNL weekly and would be considered as a night slot if that's all it can get.
More details/analysis of the new Haneda slot applications on my blog if anyone cares.
(Bold codes are the cities with existing service)

I wonder if EWR-HND would come at the expense of EWR-NRT? HND still lacks some of the connectivity of NRT to SE Asia and China, so I can see the business case of keeping both.

I would doubt that? NRT supplies and connects such a large number of other flights to within Asia that losing EWR-NRT would be crazy just for OD traffic to Tokyo?

Not sure that's really a compelling argument to make for keeping both. I don't know that all the connection times are as good, but we also don't know the approved flight times from the DoT yet.
Keeping both is a significant increase in traffic into a market which is not exceptionally strong right now. But who knows what's next.

What are the new slots at HND? I actually liked the midnight departures - I could do a full day of business in Tokyo, a dinner, then fly back, land in the afternoon, and head to work the next day ...

Airlines all want daytime as they make for better connections at both ends.

Proposed schedule for the EWR & SFO daytime HND flights:
EWR - HND - EWR
FLT 843 EWR - HND 11:00a 2:00p+1
FLT 842 HND - EWR 4:00p 3:55p
SFO - HND - SFO
FLT 875 SFO - HND 10:40a 1:55p+1
FLT 876 HND - SFO 3:50p 9:05a.
The proposed EWR - HND - EWR schedule is nearly identical to the current EWR - NRT - EWR schedule.

I'd definitely fly EWR-HND next time I go back to visit Tokyo. That said, I do think keeping the NRT connection makes sense for connectivity reasons (and if they have a JV w/ANA, I would think they would want to keep it as well). Don't know what the overlap for onward routes from NRT and HND is, though.

I got excited about the possibility for EWR-HND-TSA (my apt is along the same MRT line that goes to TSA) but realized that's impossible when I checked the proposed departure/arrival time. The last Star Alliance HND-TSA is on NH that departs at 1:20 PM.
