United Club internet access restrictions

In Denver West club. Get logged into the United Internet access and go to one of my usual websites. I get this:

United Airlines Guest
Internet Access Notification
Per company policy you have been denied access to the URL:
http://www.armslist.com/

Reason:
Not allowed to browse Weapons/Bombs category

Website blocked

Other firearm related websites blocked too. This is new.

Uh, that seems like a fairly reasonable restriction to me.

I could see the press having a field day with this scenario:

Prior to going ballistic in the United Club - Mr. Smith was perusing weapons and bombs in the United Club.......

Firearms are not bombs. I am through security, I am not carrying a firearm. While they have a right to decide on their own restrictions, it just comes down to I have a right not to pay for the club anymore. Not going ballistic, but pointing it out to those who actually get it. I can use the free Denver airport wi-fi in my same seat and access them.

It would be interesting to see if it blocks other websites.

Try some porn, tobacco, gambling, legalize marijuana, etc. and see if those show up.

How/why is this a reasonable restriction? Are you saying it's a scary thing for someone to be looking at pictures of guns in an airport??

For me personally - darn right. There is a time and place to be looking at pictures of guns, and to me - looking at them at the airport seems a bit odd and I definitely could see other passengers get nervous about that.

This issue is likely about reality, not self righteousness.

Free speech issues are NOT very important in this case. The most important question is, "Will someone call the TSA/airport/police and report someone looking at guns/bombs/etc on their laptop in the lounge." If the answer to this is maybe, esp with millions of fliers in crowded lounges, the restriction makes sense.

The ideological battle to make America comfortable with firearm images/objects is a different topic. It has been ongoing for decades with no near term resolution.

A private business protecting themselves from bad press and/or delayed operations is a very strong reason for a restriction.

If people are nervous about someone looking at a website, they either:

1. need to look away and mind their own business

or

2. need to see a professional to discuss their irrational fear

A few years back I saw a couple openly watching graphic pornography on their laptop in the SFO INTL UA Club. I wouldn't say it made me nervous, but maybe a tad uncomfortable. They were not making any effort to hide it either -- the screen was facing the ramp side, over by the bar, so anyone walking through or going to the bar for a drink had a clear view of their screen.

On the flip side of your argument, the case could be made that anyone NEEDING to look at guns during the hour or so that they spend in the airline lounge may also want to consider seeing someone .

My guess is that if using a VPN all of these issues go away, but I could be wrong...

And also wholly irrelevant here. The federal government is not putting the restrictions in place.

Their wifi, they can do what they like. I wish they would extend it to Skype and any VOIP service that exists.

I wonder if UA will now block access to OAL websites ...It's their website and all.

Did you come up behind them and start commenting on the actors' technique?
