Why did I get priority luggage?

In the midst of PSP-DEN-LGA now. I have no status. I apparently bought a V fare. I am sitting in the back of the plane and my boarding passes say I'm in group 5 on both flights.

I did request an upgrade using miles, neither of which has cleared. Currently in DEN.

yet, when I paid the $25 and checked my bag in PSP, the luggage receipt said VIP and I got a pink Priority tag on my bag.

Not that I'm complaining, but why?

Because these days contributing $25 in ancillary revenue makes one a VIP in 2015 UA's eyes. ($50 for a VVIP!) GS, 1K et al are but over-entitled elites.

Don't let it give you the illusion that your bag was actually a priority. That priority tag almost never works in the US

I get that the tag is pretty much just decoration. I'm just wondering why they put it on, since I don't think I should otherwise qualify.

I mean, unless I'm really truly a vip! DYKWIA?

Did you choose bag delivery?

Any chance you paid to have your bag delivered at your final destination?

Nope, no extra services of any kind, except the failed upgrade. Perhaps the upgrade request gave me first class bag handling, just in case it cleared.

I'm not worked up about it - just wondering what happened. I know UA is hardly a paragon of consistency, though...

Pink in PSP is the norm. See if you bags come off the belt first.

Happy and Safe travels.

FWIW, my bag did come off the belt first at LGA, with the other pink-tagged Priority bags.

Why did I get priority luggage?

It was the upgrade that did it. Even though it failed they give you an E for effort.

I consider it sort of a day-glo red.

+1 I had on one single bag TG F, LH HON and UA Priority after connecting from Asia to Europe to Denver (re checking bags) and home to San Diego, and my bag was last.
