Calculating RDM vs PQM for status

I'm still trying to get a handle on the new rules. Would appreciate a double check of my calculations.

Flying a multi-city flight ABQ - IAH - Muc - VIE outbound
Muc - IAH - ABQ inbound

BIS miles = 12, 557 Cost = $1538

So, 1538 x 7 (current silver) = 10,766 RDMs

12,557 x 1.25 (silver 25% bonus) = 15,696 PQMs which count towards status for next year. Am I right that this silver bonus still applies ?

Sure was easier to project in the old system !

You don't multiply by 1.25 for PQM, it will only be 12557.

Also, I'm not sure if fees get included in the RDM so it will prbably be lower than what you have above

think of it this way : the base miles is 5 x dollar, and silver bonus is 40%

so it's (1,538 x 5) x (140%) = 7,690 x 140% = 10,766

If your ticket cost $1538, there are probably at least $200 in taxes and fees in there which are deducted from the RDM calculation.

I agree as well. Took me a long time, had to change my thinking - PQM and RDM are two separate animals, best determined separately.

PQM for status qualification - 12557 miles "butt in seat"
RDM you can use for future award travel - (Cost - taxes - fees) x 7, where Cost = $1538, taxes = $xxx, fees = $yyy

Example if taxes = $138 and fees = $100, then ($1538 - $138 - $100) = $1300, so RDM = $1300 x 7 = 9100 miles

Silver never got a PQM bonus, and still doesn't.

An international ticket - I bet it's more than $200.

Think of it this way - the only time you get a PQM bonus is with a high fare ticket - Y/B for a Y ticket, I think. and then the premium classes. No one get a PQM bonus for being an elite.

Search of random dates yields a ticket with that routing that costs $1,567, of which $171 is taxes/fees.

Yes somewhere between 10-15% is what I would expect.

You're forgetting that YQ/fuel is part of the ticket pricing - with respect to PQDs.

I forgot that the 25% bonus used to be for RDMs and never for PQMs. Thanks for the reminder and for all the input.

Tracking in 2 accounts, RDMs and PQMs is a pain !

And the solution to this is..... AA/AS?

I know the new mileage earning is a screwy deal, but the real problem I have is I just don't understand it. Or maybe I do and I don't like the outcome.

I swore I would only fly AA this year but I confess I booked a ticket on dotbomb when I was on a plane the other day as it was easier to get it done.

Are they saying how many miles one will earn when you buy a ticket like they used to? Not that it was ever correct of course.

It's the lack of certainty in the calculation is what gets to me.

Calculating RDM vs PQM for status

Just to confirm pure BIS miles still is the one that counts for MM status right? Regardless of RDMs? In the above scenario 12,557 towards MM?

only if on United metal...in the OP's example, the MUC-VIE segment (at least) wouldn't be on UA metal and wouldn't count toward MM.
