True story , about 2 years ago.
DW is handicapped. I carry her bags. I had a rolling carry on and another bag on top of it, much smaller but bigger than a personal item. she had her small purse . I always check in with the GA for her pre-board. I wait in line, she sits.

Flight is slightly delayed and there is an additional GA. full flight DW is sitting in the handicap area. New GA demands that I put my bags in the sizer . I put in the roller, fits nicely, pull it out and put in the other bag in the large sizer. GA goes ballistic and he insists loudly that I must put it in the smaller sizer. I say "no I don't it's my wife's bag" he bellows I don't care who owns it you have to put it in the smaller sizer. At this point original GA has reached the man, pulls him aside and talks to him. He grumps at me "why didn't you say your wife was a passenger?" I said I have two boarding cards in my hand, I thought it was your job to ask.

He quickly finds other things to do and the original GA is apologizing and laughing at the same time

No way anybody on FT can tell you what a GA for any particular flight will do. If you get picked off by a GA on a flight where UA is strictly enforcing the rules, the bag will be gate-checked. If you aren't and the bag fits, you are fine. It's that simple.

What anybody here thinks won't matter.

I've been using a old Delsey Helium roll-aboard and it's finally starting to show its age. The unique tethered TSA pouch has detached, and a wheel jammed in the middle of a 7-city swing through Europe last week. The wheel is spinning again now, but I'm ready to invest in a new bag.

I'm 1K on United, and hence most of my international travel is on Star Alliance - United when possible, then Lufthansa, Air Canada (ugh), and occasionally others. My Delsey just fits into the United sizer (packed normally it's a snug fit), and it's never been questioned on any domestic or international flight. But, for my new bag, I'd like to be sure that it will fit the common sizers well enough so that even a cranky GA won't make me gate-check it. (So, something like the Briggs & Riley Baseline Widebody that drops nicely into the United sizer but projects a bit above the metal edge is out.)

My airline priorities are:
1) United & UX 2) Lufthansa/AC 3) American/Delta 4) Copa & other large SA partners

Ideally, I'd like it to fit the overhead bins on some of the smaller United (is it the A320 that's tight?) & UX planes, too. (These are the bins where rollers go in sideways. My Delsey is probably 10" deep, and takes a bit of effort and squeezing to get it in the opening. Something that runs an actual 9" or so would probably be better.)

Overall capacity is really important - I just did a 15-day trip in my (barely compliant) Delsey, including my cowboy boots. I can't really drop down to a 20" size or a spinner with reduced interior space. I don't really care about exterior pockets, etc., as I use my laptop bag for stuff I need to access.

I'm focused on 2-wheel rollers (vs. 4-wheel spinners) for maximum interior capacity, durability, and use on cobblestones, curbs, broken pavement, etc.

Here's what I'm looking at right now:

Lat_56 RW01 - looks like it will fit all sizers, but 7.5" depth seems a bit skimpy for long trips. Cool design.
TravelPro Magna 2 22 - reportedly fits United, but maybe too tall for LH?
TravelPro Crew 10 22" - 11" depth looks too big for United sizer?
Briggs & Riley U122CX - fits United per wiki, but too tall for LH?
Samsonite Aspire Xlite Softside 21.5 Exp - looks like it should work for UA & LH
Claire Chase Classic 21" Pullman Upright - kind of an off-the-wall idea. Dimensions look compliant, but leather construction gives a 9 lb weight. Also have a 22" version.

Any of these known to be non-compliant with the sizers of UA, LH, or other majors?

Does Lufthansa have any extra space in their sizer? They are only 1cm less than United on the height spec, and are looser on the depth and width. Recommendations/thoughts? (Note that my key objective is compliance with the actual sizers. I totally get that you can travel for years with no problems with a slightly non-compliant bag, particularly if you are elite status, look professional, etc.) Thanks!

The Briggs & Riley U122CX is compliant with UA and in the non-expanded mode it will fit in the overhead of an RJ700. The best feature of Briggs and Riley is they will guarantee and make repairs for the lifetime of the bag.

Thanks, Nigos. The U122CX looks like a really solid choice for a domestic bag. It seems to make good use of the interior volume and the compression mechanism is cool. The guarantee, of course, is great. My concern is whether it will fit, say, Lufthansa or Air Canada sizers.

I'd guess few GAs would question it, but I wouldn't want to invest in a nice bag like this only to find that some *A partners are cracking down and sizing anything that looks iffy.

Lat56 RW01 Sizer Test

I tested the Lat56 RW01 (two-wheel roller) in the United sizer in AUS. I didn't expect it to fit, as I measured its width and got about 15.9 inches vs. the stated 14". It dropped in easily as it's a slender bag. To my amazement, it fit vertically as well - the whole bag disappeared with just a tiny (say, 1/4") projection above the frame from the wheel guard.

I would call this a "fit" - only a really cranky GA would object, particularly since it drops in so cleanly. It's not close to a snug fit. (Since the sizer is supposedly 15", I'm not sure why it doesn't project more. I didn't measure the sizer, but it was certainly a legit United one.) I notice the arrow on the sizer ends at the blue paint, not the metal edge. From there, we are probably looking at 3/4". Anyone think this would be a problem?

It looked a bit more over-width in the Delta and American sizers, going past the line by an inch or so. This bag looks small, though, and is unlikely to be questioned unless they are sizing everything. The semi-rigid top keeps it from bulging like a fabric top would.

It's heavier than expected, clocking in at close to 10 lbs. vs the stated 6.8. Waiting for a reply from Lat56 on that. This is the brand new version that has a flush fabric handle on the side. Really nice appearance and features. The suiter hanger is a rather large foam thing intended to prevent wrinkles. Unexpectedly bulky, but probably good if you pack an actual suit.

Reluctantly, I decided to return the Lat56. Love the design, the look, and nifty features. But, the width and weight are both not what I was looking for. In addition, I found the RW01 instantly tips over when I put my laptop bag on top of it. That in itself is a deal-breaker. I think it's due to its perpendicular stance. My old Delsey, and many other rollers, lean back when standing. This moves the center of gravity back enough to keep it stable with a bag on top. The top of the Lat56 is fairly soft, too, which probably doesn't help stability.

Back to square one. Focused now on the new Genius Pack Roller and maybe the Victorinox Werks. (Ugh, will this ever end?)

After being a long term Travel Pro guy, I recently changed to Eagle Creek. Love the bag and it easily fits in the sizer (which my TP would not).

It's not as heavy as it looks. They're almost unbreakable. The only thing on those that wear out is the rubber o-ring that you can easily replace. Pelican also sells many foam inserts if you're carrying things like camera gear, telescopes, etc.

United hand baggage: large squishy backpack OK?

I've got a laptop backpack I'm thinking of taking on an international then domestic United flight (itinary is EDI-EWR-MSY) as my only hand baggage. The bag is soft (so will squish down so it easily fits in a hand luggage checker at the gate, and will go under my seat on the plane if needs-be). However, the bottom sticks out slightly when not squished - so the dimension that should be under 22cm is more like 30cm.

Is this likely to be a problem? I can take a smaller bag if needs-be, but this one has good ergonomics and is well padded. The laptop bag is an older model of this bag (with slightly different dimensions) if that helps visualise it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/wenger-Swi...-/152307293428

Hope this is in the right place. Please move thread if not - thanks!

For UA, they use a hand luggage checker at the gate, which is sized very slightly larger than the official dimensions. If it fits in that, you are fine.

However UA's passengers take on board far far more hand baggage than you will be used to seeing at EDI. The flight to EWR should be fine but, on the domestic flight, it's likely that they will have run out of space on the plane by the time your boarding group is called so you might have to gate check your bag. This will be free but be prepared to grab what you need for the flight.

Thanks - it'll fit in a hand luggage checker at the official dimensions fine, but the soft material will need to squash in as it goes into the checker. That should be OK?

That's useful to know about the risk of having to gate check it. In that case, I'll carry a smaller bag inside and have in-flight stuff handy.
