Yes, weather has been a problem in St John's the past few days.

My friend is currently on the DEN-NRT which has been delayed per the UA website to severe weather conditions according to .bomb but per pilot, due to weight and balance issues. They are taxiing now-3 hours late. And the entertainment system is broken and will be down the whole flight. And bathroom issues.

I would assume "weight and balance" is actually caused by headwinds or hot temps for a high altitude takeoff. So WX would be reasonable.

Perhaps they forgot to empty the lav holding tanks?

The three hour delay is a little harder to understand if it was just weight and balance.

Apparently the announcements said that due to temp, wind and high altitude they had to offload a pallet. Then they closed up then decided to offload another one. That is a LONG flight to have sitting on the tarmac for 3 hours. And no resolution on "bathroom" issues or in-flight entertainment. That'll be a rough flight!

UA54, EWR-CDG left EWR 1:19 late, then did a 180° turn over the Northeastern tip of Newfoundland for an arrival back into EWR at 3:18AM. Subsequently, the flight was cancelled due to MX.

I wonder how many customers on Fridays cancelled UA902 were re-booked on Saturdays UA54 and scored the double.

does UA report in their quarterly earnings calls how much they pay out in compensation? I mean, with all of these delayed/cancelled flights, both international and domestic, it has to run into the millions a quarter.

UA54 EWR to CDG Aug 1. After an hour plus delay so that the toilets could be cleaned, we flew to Newfoundland and then one of the engines had a problem. So we flew back to Newark arriving 3:30 am. We got lucky and got rooms but I fear most did not. Bags are supposed to be automatically transferred to tonight's special UA2077. Sure hope so.

My hunch is that they don't proactively pay out unless pressed with a complaint. Look at the EU261 claims and how passengers have reported having to jump through roadblock after roadblock just to get them to pay up. The only way paying out compensation will really improve the operation is if the individual departments which are responsible for the issues are billed back on the compensation claims against their department budgets. In short it comes down to holding departments accountable.

I'm boycotting United until my travel schedule can't avoid it, but this one isn't on United. YYT is tearing up a runway to put in a CAT III ILS, which I believe has them operating with even higher minimums than usual for the time being. Toss in the awful fog they get there and you'll get delays/cancellations for days at a time (hence the need for the more advanced ILS...)

I've wondered the same the same. I've looked through their SEC filings on Edgar and couldn't find any specific info.

8/2: UA376 GDL-IAH we were originally scheduled to depart at 6:52AM but during the walk around it was found that an external light was inop so we had to wait until sunrise. We got off the ground around 7:30AM.
