If My Flight Is Delayed Can I Avoid Change Fee?

With wind in ORD there is a chance my flight may be delayed.

I will not be able to travel and would like to avoid the $200 change fee.

Would a delayed flight be eligible for avoiding the fee? If so, do I have to check-in to be eligible? Can I just check-in online and not go to ORD?

I believe if your flight gets delayed more than a couple of hours, they give you the option to change or cancel.

I think it depends on the length of the delay and probably what type of change you are looking for... if you just want to change to a flight tomorrow, same origin and destination, you should be able to convince a phone agent to make the change. But if you wanna change to a completely different route next month... well that might be tough to get done because of a weather delay. (IMHO)

Call and ask!

There is an exception policy for ORD today which waives change fee, although it is somewhat limited:
Fees for same-day flight changes are waived within 24 hours of original departure.
For all other changes, the change fee will be waived, but a difference in fare may apply.

The problem is my flight is tomorrow and I'm hoping flights will be backed up.

There is no way to judge what would be possible until you know the specifics.

How much of a change are you wanting -- is it within SDC?

Read the waiver. They'll waive the change fee, but a difference in fare may apply.

If the new flight is the same price, it's even. If it's less, you may get money back. If it's more, you pay the difference.

Find out how much it is, and if it's close, just change it and you're done with the waiver and not having to ask for any favors.

Two problems:

I don't think I'm eligible for the waiver as I am scheduled for tomorrow; and

I do not know my new travels dates

If the delay is significant, you may be able to cancel your current reservation and book a new flight. Otherwise this seems unlikely if not impossible.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.4.3; HTC One Build/KTU84L) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/37.0.2062.117 Mobile Safari/537.36)

Just ask for a refund if your flight is delayed. Say you want to take a flight on southwest that is at the time you originally booked and that is Ll that will fit your schedule
