GPU clears on MEL-SYD, but not SYD-SFO - redeposit?

Searched threads but did not find an immediate answer to this ...

Looks like SYD-SFO will not clear this Sat, but other domestic segs along with MEL-SYD did clear. Will my GPU be redeposited in this case, or does the MEL-SYD segment mean that it will have been used? If so, I may need to proactively cancel the upgrade!

There is a thread (see the master wiki) on this. If MEL-SYD is treated as a CPU route (i.e. not supported by instruments), then the GPU will automatically redeposit. This is also noted in the united.com upgrades site.

If not, then, I'd actually do this: pull the upgrade, and ask to apply the GPU only to SYD-SFO.

That's sort of unchartered waters and I'd think it would be up to the discretion of a MP supervisor, but you would likely get your GPU back (at least I would fight it and have full confidence I could convince an agent to redeposit it).

and why is that? It's a GPU-only route and classified as a BF segment. Consequently if it clears the GPU is consumed. General wisdom is to only waitlist SYD-LAX/SFO and then once cleared add the MEL segment.
Curious to hear from the OP how this evolves; I agree, it's a stupid case.

Maybe I'll put a call in to MP to ask for clarification. I don't care too much about the short Aussie section.

If not automatically redeposited, call CS.

They will do it for you. If your "over water" segment does not clear, your GPU will be refunded.

And if any CS agent tells you otherwise, call back.

Happened to me many times. Got the GPU back each and every time.

MEL-SYD is an HOUR flight.

Not even worth a regional, (which does not cover non Nth America of course) must less a Global.

Plane will be near empty. Grab an exit seat and watch half a cruddy movie.

Officially, MEL-SYD is BF/GF, and the rules state that if any BF/GF route clears then the upgrade is used.

However the one time it happened to me I had no trouble at all getting them refunding the GPU when asked. It didn't happen automatically, but it was a quick call to get it refunded.

Mind you, this'll only be a probably for the next few months - come October this tag flight is disappearing when they start LAX-MEL direct.

GPU clears on MEL-SYD, but not SYD-SFO - redeposit?

My GPU was automatically redeposited in my account when my gpu cleared for MEL-SYD but not for SYD-SFO. January 2012.

I was the only passenger seated up stairs on a 747 MEL-SYD
