The Cape Air saga continues

Source: Cape Air’s Guam-bound flights canceled three times, Marianas Variety (Saipan), July 26, 2014. http://www.mvariety.com/cnmi/cnmi-ne...ed-three-times

TRAVELERS headed to Guam and other destinations have been stranded on Saipan since Friday night.

Cape Air/ United Express has cancelled flights three times since Friday, promting passengers tp complain about the airline’s “unreliable” service.

Seven Taiwanese tourists were among those who were told early Saturday morning that their United Airlines’ flight 5070 had been cancelled and rescheduled for 2:30 p.m., Saturday.

Charles Ho, who served as spokesperson of the group, said they were dismayed over this erratic changes in flights.

He said they missed their flight from Guam to Taiwan and they would have to buy a new ticket.

“We need to pay for it. Our flight is not ‘re-bookable’,” said Ho.
A little history:
* Continental Connection contracted Cape Air since July 2004 and cut GUM-SPN jet service soon after.
* Pacific Island Aviation (Northwest Airlink) went out of business in February 2005.
* Freedom Air, which began in the 1970s, went into bankruptcy and is currently temporarily/indefinitely not flying.
* The only transport left between the Mariana Islands other than Cape Air seems to be STAR Marianas, owned by the same company as Tinian Dynasty casino.

The islanders swear by using Star Marianas since you don't have to use TSA if you book with Star Marianas. It's a lot cheaper with a lot less taxes and much more reliable.

I know this has been an issue for some time but it's unclear what the problem is right now. Maybe Cape Air needs new aircraft?

Except they had two fatal crashes in too few years in questionable circumstances.

When I booked a trip for last fall (which I eventually had to cancel due to storms) there were two planes based on united.com flight status display. Apparently it went down to one plane and whenever something breaks it becomes a problem.

Due to mechanical issues, Cape Air will not resume flying to ROP until Aug 8. How is this acceptable???

All three flights were canceled again today, July 28. This includes people on Saipan scheduled for surgeries on Guam that may have to be postponed or canceled.

Looks like mainline United is going to assist Cape Air during until their aircraft is ready.

It'd be kinda fun to do the SPN - ROP segment in a 737. I'd guess it's less than 15 minutes in the air.

It doesn't state aircraft but have to believe it'd be a 737 and agree that would be a fun but EXTREMELY short flight

My Cape Air saga has come to an end. I don't mean to stray off topic but this is the only Cape Air thread I could find.

I flew Cape Air on a 016 ticket which included BOS-ACK-BOS.

After two months of requesting credits I was finally advised that not all Cape Air flights earn credit. Only those "From San Juan, Puerto Rico, (SJU) to destinations in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean."

The ticket cost a ton, and it was all the in and out of ACK so my PQD on a $700 ticket is not $200ish.

I'm not sure what else they'd do it with. All UA has in GUM is the 737 (unless you count the 777 that travels HNL-GUM-NRT).

You can only earn miles on Cape Air flights that are booked using the UA codeshare. Stand alone Cape Air flights do not earn miles regardless of how they are ticketed, you have to have a UA flight number.

The operation in GUM with Cape Air is different, out there they act as a United Express Carrier so the flights are ONLY sold under the UA flight number. Just like the more familiar United Express operations here with Skywest, Mesa, etc.

So to summarize Cape Air;

Ex-BOS - Cape Air codes only, no UA codeshares, no UA miles
Ex-SJU - Cape Air and UA codes, UA miles if booked as a UA codeshare
Ex-GUM - UA only, always earn UA miles. Cannot be booked with Cape Air direct.

I'm not sure why you'd be upset not getting miles on the ex-BOS flights. The description of the Cape Air partnership with UA is quite clear that it's limited to the Caribbean. In fact, most of UA's partnerships (outside of Star Alliance) are limited in scope and do not apply to every flight the partner operates (ZK, EI, HI, etc).
