United - Origami airplane timelapse
Find hidden prizes in our new safety video contest 7 - 11 Aug
Before commenting about Jeff not being in the new video, please note that he was not in the old one. There is still a pre-roll video, and he's still in it.
The a numerous humorous interplays in the video, but a few might escape attention in first viewing:
0:28 Guy on a unicycle with baguettes playing the accordion, zipping by the signs that says no unicycles, baguettes and accordion
0:35 origami crane, Eiffel Tower model, and flamingo in taxi (tie-back to previous ad programs and other elements within the video)
1:34 Movie poster in the background for "Elbow Room 2"
1:36 & 1:56 Bus scrolling sign ("Lavatory Occupied" and "Baggage on Carousel 2")
1:41 The marquee is showing on the vegas casino "Legroom Friendly", with the chorus girls doing a kickstand
2:06 Men fighting on top of gondola (Same two from the Elbow Room 2 poster)
2:37 Kangaroo / pouch double entendre
3:20 FA blowing out smoke from the volcano after explaining the no smoking regulations
3:55 "I heart UA" carved on the tree
4:03 Bag overhead storage (no bins)
4:20 "No flight attendants were harmed in the making of this film" flashed while FA appears to be bitten

I guess that is out with the new video? Or did they keep the same, multiple language intro piece?

Jokes and humor in a safety video? I recall WN FAs making jokes during their announcement. All that tells me is that the airline doesn't take safety seriously. I can understand jokes while they are talking about MP or when they say friendly skies, but not during a safety video.
If anything, I think the videos should be more serious/realistic. For example, when they grab for the oxygen mask or put on a life vest, they shouldn't be smiling. They should have somewhat of a serious face but be calm.

I miss these kind of videos. CO used to have safety videos ala UA with the FAs from different bases in the video. I would take those with the CO style narration.

The slow narration and garageband music makes the video feel even more dated.

I think you're being a bit too harsh on the video. Since practically nothing about CO changed after 1991, the old-school feel seems appropriate.

I really prefer it if they do not use humor. Safety isn't a laughing matter. But, with that in mind, so many carriers have switched to at least some humor, so United is just doing what the neighbors are doing.
I dearly miss the formerly United 747-400 video because the flight attendant had an unthinkably thick Midwestern accent. It was endearing, but it made me crack up every time. I'm sure she was ready to talk about the Cubs or deep dish pizza at any moment.
Those videos, including the famous Dulles-based "Maurice," who passed away, were great. They were warm, inviting, but made it clear that United took our safety seriously.
The current one, misleading Thai welcome aside, is just fine. I quite like the calm and inviting African American flight attendant at the beginning and the Japanese at the end. I'm actually sorry to see them go.
A friend just flew on Condor, and he commented that the safety video was dreadful. He's not a plane junkie of any kind, neither were my friends who were here that night. But we all looked at it on YouTube and found it to be a bizarre humor that did not resonate with us. He said it made him a bit concerned about flying on Condor. Their video involves an Elvis impersonator, among other curiosities. It captures one's attention in a disturbing way.
I am firmly against Air New Zealand's bizarre use of celebrities, the various dance versions, and other "shows." The message needs to be about what to do in the event of an emergency, not how to dance.
The cool ones, in my opinion, are Icelandair, TAP, and El Al. Icelandair's is amazing because it encompasses all of the information in the setting of Iceland's beauty. El Al has a sort of "Tinkerbell" character. There's a bit of whimsy--she goes crazy when someone smokes in the washroom. TAP uses passengers, not employees, and they're just great. It ends with TAP's endearing slogan, "de braços abertos." But all of these airlines are more somber than Condor or Air New Zealand in their approach; each makes it clear that safety is the focal point.

I really like Eva Air's safety video. It was one I actually watched though there screens are so small on business, it was hard to see with the light contrast

PMUA videos are still better...
Here's one for the 747-400, back when UAL spent the money to make individual videos for individual fleets.
http://youtu.be/D6-pvtPXr9A
Wonderful music, modern visuals, actual flight attendants.

I actually thought the last PMUA safety videos were pretty boring and looked cheap. My favorites are either the first one after the merger (yes, really) for looking slick and for being pretty short, or the one in the 90s when it gave off a "We're Such A Big International Airline That Flies Everywhere And We Don't Give A ****" vibe.
