United Club Card

I'm looking at weekly business trips for the rest of the year and finally might see value in a UC membership. It seems like a no brainer to get the United Club Card vs paying for a standard membership. It's $100 less a year and they don't seem to charge the initiation fee plus Chase is offering $100 back right now.

Other than any approval/credit concerns are there any other potential drawbacks to the credit card as a means for club membership? Does it qualify the holder for upgrades on reward tickets too or is that just the Explorer?

Thanks for the info and sorry if this was answered elsewhere, I couldn't find an old thread.

It's good for upgrades on award tickets. No drawbacks, and as a weekly traveler, the Club Card is probably the right choice. I find the work desks extremely useful, plus the Club agents can help with various issues vs service counters or phone.

Look around and you can probably find an offer for first year fee waived (rather than $100 statement credit). Seems to be targeted at UA elites.

One might question why regular memberships are still available since the credit card method seems superior in every way. The answer to that question is that not everybody can get the credit card: those with bad credit, or who don't live in the US, among others, can't get the credit card. But for those who can, I see no reason to pay for a regular annual club membership.

I would add employer reimbursed memberships also.

Smart employers would reimburse the card fee and not the club membership. Aside from the fact that the card costs less, the card membership fee is fully expensible for business purposes while the club membership fee is nt.

This is exactly how we do it at our company for exactly this reason!

I believe you can also walk into any Chase branch and get a year free as well.

As long as you're already a member and know what the club is like, agree that the card is a no-brainier, especially with your future travel plans. UA offers a statement credit yearly to 1k and above. Also, in case you're wondering, the membership you get is a full membership, so all the same access rules apply. (Contrast that to the DL sky club access that comes with the AMEX Reserve card, where access rules are different and the membership isn't same as buying outright.)

+1 on that. Go into the branch and you should be able to get the first year's fee waived. They also sometimes have pamphlets/deals for the Club card within the clubs themselves with different offers.

The club card has been a great value for me for the club access alone. Don't forget you also get Hyatt Platinum status (which then in turn gives you M Life Gold status).

It's a group of casinos/resorts mainly in Las Vegas with a few in other locations.

A nice tertiary perk for anyone that frequents Vegas occasionally and has the club card.

I am thinking about getting the standard United MileagePlus card and getting the 50,000 bonus miles. IF I do this and then in the future get the Club card, can I still get the first year's fee waived? Is there a waiting period for this to happen?

You can. I did it separated by about eight months.

There is a master thread on the Chase MP Club Card, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unite...5-forward.html. Will merge recent posts in that thread and close this thread.
