Need to book BKK-HKT... 17,500 miles w/ UA ~ better redemption options?

Hi All,

I'm flying on Emirates A380 F (woooot!) into BKK, but then I need to get to HKT that evening. Part of the recent devaluation now puts that segment at 17,500 miles, which isn't exactly great value... Should I just book the $100 ticket with cash? Is there some other program I'm not considering where I can do a distance-based award? Thanks in advance for the advice! I guess on the flipside, it only wants 25,000 miles to do the segment in business class, but considering that I can fly SFO-JFK in business class for 25,000 miles, I'm having a tough time even considering such an option for BKK-HKT. In any case, if there's an option I'm not considering, let me know!

Buy the ticket from TG. Don't even THINK about burning UA miles for that. Utter and complete waste of miles.

ANA awards are distance-based, but you're almost certainly better off just buying a revenue ticket from TG or Bangkok Airways.

Except no one-ways on NH. Not sure whether they charge fuel surcharges on TG awards. But doesn't really matter, this would be one of the most foolish redemptions that could possibly be made. Intra-Thailand flights are super cheap.

Thanks for the feedback . I'm obvioulsy a moron here haha. Well, I thought there would be something like how Avios is 4500 miles from SFO-LAX... maybe something or less miles than that w/ a different program, but it doesn't look like it - thanks for the feedback. Cash money it is.

Delete - misread OP's destination as HKG instead of HKT

I suggest to pay $200 for TG C (just make sure you are on a widebody). You do not want to spoil your EK F experience with Y connection.

Yep I absolutely misread it - I'll update. Agree bad value but I was presenting another option from a points perspective though obviously irrelevant since I misread

It would be a pretty good Avios redemption to HKG

Why? Craptabulous food, no alcohol, <1hr flight.... why on earth would you pay double price?

OP, definitely take a look on the TG page for 'Plan my trip' > 'Special offers'. The prices will be lower than booking through the main search portal.

At the moment I'm getting an error but the current prices are <$90 on the promo that runs through Aug 31.

this thread hits me in a sweet spot, sitting out in HK right now, thinking of HKT, and missing the 17.5K biz redemption amounts for hops in SE Asia.

OP, just pay the 100! the BKK -> HKT hop will be over before you know it.
