SkyWest DEN-HYS starts 1 August, 2014
A big deal for Hays, Kansas, which AFAIK has never had jet service of any kind until now (only Beechcraft 1900s)...

If there was ever a use for CRJ200s, it might be here.
And, prices aren't bad either - I see some RTs in August pricing out at $194.

The first United Express flights, operated by SkyWest Airlines, from Hays to Denver are scheduled to take off beginning Aug. 1, 2014. These new daily flights make it possible for Hays travelers to easily and conveniently connect to United’s global network at the airline’s Denver hub.
The Hays flights will operate using 50-seat Bombardier-manufactured CRJ200 aircraft.

Certainly didn't see this one coming, though I'm glad to see more of Kansas covered by UAX. Though this is EAS service, hopefully it is well utilized by the locals.

GTFO that's crazy... a real jet to HYS. Looks like this replaces the ZK EAS service.

It's just an EAS route - very little downside as long as the subsidy remains:

Hays is my birthplace, and a nice little town (no big towns in western KS). Their airport is certainly more convenient than driving 4+ hours to MCI, DEN or ICT. I'm guessing that the taxpayer takes in on the nose, though.

HYS was a Great Lakes (ZK) route for several years but, like many ZK routes was dropped due to their (likely bankrupting) pilot shortage. I frequently used ZK's service to HYS, Garden City (GCK), and McCook, NE (MCK) it's nice to see that Skywest is picking up with HYS route as it's likely the best of the Western KS station since Hays is right on I-70.
Rumor has it that there has been some pretty significant oil & gas leasing in Western KS (more intense in SW but moving north) so I wouldn't be surprised if there is increased traffic related to that.
