PS flights are not CPU eligible. Require miles or RPU/GPU
However upgrades can not be request once checkin has started unless R>0 (no new requests for waitlisted upgrades after T-24 and no request via the online system at all)
There is only 1 free seat and there are 4 already on the waitlist.

Then it wasn't due to a CPU. If you were upgraded without using an instrument then it was an OpUp...and you got very lucky!
OR...perhaps you were flying CO/UA into EWR? Lot's of people have mistakenly thought that if they scored a 752 lie flat from LAX/SFO-EWR that this was "p.s." service. It's not -- and it is eligible for CPUs.
Anyway, I agree with the above...don't expect it to happen again.

JFK-SFO down to 7x ?
i'm checking 2015 schedules and I'm noticing one thing ...
previous JFK-SFO has been 8x and JFK-LAX has been 6x for the longest time
I checked 2 random fridays in summer and fall 2015 and they're both showing SFO at 7x. when was this change announced ?
is UA going to lose those JFK slots, along with the JFK-IAD ones ?

Just took my first RT on PS. As gleff was fond of saying, it's all about the seat. Nothing special otherwise. The service was good both directions, maybe even a little more attentive than usual as the FAs came by a couple of times at the end of the flight to offer refills. But the food was typical mediocre UA fare and didn't even reflect what was on the menu cards!
That being said, having a comfy lie-flat recliner seat for 5-6 hours is a huge improvement over the normal domestic F seats and easily worth an RPU. But maybe I will pack my own food next time.
Another plus: It appears they try to protect these flights from cancellation, there were a slew of SFO-EWR weather cancels during last Thursday's horrendous storms, but the early PS flights went forward.
Another minus: The JFK terminal and UC are pretty horrid, makes LAX look luxurious.
Anyway, just my thoughts, I doubt I will be flying this route again for a while.

In the schedule I have from Dec 1, 2014 most of 2015 will be 7 flights a day:
(d1 means days with 1 flight, d2 means days with 2 flights, etc)
Code:
month | d1 | d2 | d3 | d4 | d5 | d6 | d7 | d8 | d9 | d10 ------------+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----+----- 2014-12-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 17 | 7 | 0 | 0 2015-01-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 5 | 18 | 3 | 0 | 0 2015-02-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 3 | 20 | 0 | 0 | 0 2015-03-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 5 | 22 | 0 | 0 | 0 2015-04-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 4 | 25 | 0 | 0 | 0 2015-05-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 1 | 26 | 0 | 0 | 0 2015-06-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 0 | 26 | 0 | 0 | 0 2015-07-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 0 | 27 | 0 | 0 | 0 2015-08-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 2 | 26 | 0 | 0 | 0 2015-09-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 26 | 0 | 0 | 0 2015-10-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 5 | 26 | 0 | 0 | 0 2015-11-01 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 26 | 0 | 0 | 0
Meanwhile, EWR-SFO is at a crazy high of 16x daily in July. EWR-LAX is not too bad either at 13x.

Premier Silver CPU on PS flight = fluke?
Hey everyone - I read on here before that CPUs do not apply on PS flights. However, my wife and I (I'm premier silver, she's A3*S) both got upgraded on the JFK - LAX PS flight this morning. Was this a fluke or is this common?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Total fluke, unless they needed to do operational upgrades (if coach was oversold).
Either way, kudos. I can barely get my RPUs to clear on this route.

I have to assume, as a UA Premier, you don't mean E+.
In that sense, you were the benefit of an op-up - and not a CPU at all.
It is not common to be op-up'd on any route. It happens due to overselling of Y, and usually goes via Premier status.
