Official size as per Rule 23.B.2, Baggage, Contract of Carriage:
Quote:
https://www.united.com/web/format/pd...f_Carriage.pdf

Carry-on Baggage must not exceed the Maximum Outside Linear Dimensions of 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm), which includes its wheels and handles.

Personal items must not exceed 9 inches (22 cm) x 10 inches (25 cm) x 17 inches (43 cm), which includes any wheels and handles.

A personal item that exceeds these maximum linear dimensions but is not greater than 9 inches (22 cm) x 14 inches (35 cm) x 22 inches (56 cm) will be considered as Carry-on Baggage. Carry-on Baggage or personal items suspected of being oversized may require being placed into a sizing unit to determine acceptability. Carry-on Baggage that exceeds the Maximum Linear Dimensions allowed or that exceeds the Carry-on Free Baggage Allowance will be considered as Checked Baggage and is subject to Checked Baggage service charges.
Under the 2013 contract of carriage, which is still valid for various tickets outstanding, the cabin baggage rule states a maximum of 45 linear inches combined for the LHW dimensions with no given side exceeding 22 inches. For such tickets, the cabin bag sizers are not lawfully applicable if the LHW combined linear inches don't exceed 45 linear inches and no side of the bag exceeds 22 inches. In other words for tickets issued last year, some bags allowed under the contract of carriage don't fit in the sizer without sticking out on at least one side.

New United Carry-On Sizer and Enforcement of Policy (eff. 1 March 2014)

I was travelling from EWR->IAH on Saturday and noticed new Carry-On Sizers at the gates in both locations.

Here is a description, since the picture does not seem to display.

Its a two tier rack. Above the rack is a sign that say.

"Check the size of your carry-on
1 carry-on + 1 personal item

FAA regs and Check Bag Fees info"

The upper rack has the sizing for the personal item size at up to 9" x 10" x 17"
The lower rack has the sizing for the carry-on item 9" x 14" x 22"

I wonder if this means that the rules are going to start being enforced? Last time I noticed, maybe several weeks ago, the gates still had the one size sizer.

More Friendly Skies on the way .

Cheers,

Cheers,
Last week in DEN, they had a large number of boxes containing the new sizers piled up in a gate area. Can't imagine UA would spend money on sizers and not do anything.

Hopefully they do start enforcing. People need to stop bringing their fridge with them.

I was forced to put my roller in the sizer on Saturday departing from HNL with BG 1. Fit like a charm. Two 1Ks were stopped for having two bags plus a bag of food. The flight was half full too.

Hope springs eternal.

Just make the rules known, enforce them even-handedly and in short order the boarding mayhem will be ended.

Maybe UA could issue a home-use version of the sizers to people who can't use a measuring tape !

Now that's just plain silly.

How big were the 2 bags? The bag of food is exempt from the 1+1 requirement, assuming it's normal sized take out bag and not a sack of barley.

To be sure, the situation described by the OP would appear to be the result of a ‘conservative’ approach to gate management, which doesn’t typically enforce the checked baggage charge for oversize carry-ons. Still, reminders and reinforcement of our carry-on policy continue to be important for us to do, when our priority is above all a safe experience for our customers and co-workers, in addition to minimizing the boarding delays and wasted overhead bin space that oversize carry-ons can create. To that end, over the next few months, all of our domestic and international stations will receive new “sizers” that will more effectively and consistently measure both carry-on bags (max 45 linear inches) and personal items (max 36 linear inches). We are also asking our agents to more proactively identify carry-on bags that do not meet the dimensions of the sizers, so that they may be lobby- or gate-checked before flight departure.

The updated sizers will start to appear over the next few days in our hubs, and will roll out across the network by the end of the year. Our official carry-on policy can be found here.

I hear ya but whats the difference if a bag wont fit the sizer but does fit into the overhead wheels in or out, as long as the bag isnt sideways. Having more then 1 bag I agree even if they fit the sizer shouldnt be allowed if the plane isnt near full, although I cant remember ever having more then 1 carryon bag

If the carriers could speed up getting the bags out on the carrousel then I can hear it, but having to wait at times close to 1/2 an hr before the bags start to trickle down, who wants to waste their time

Were they in F or Y?

Is that lower rack dimension a typo? UA's policy is 9 x 14 x 22.

It's irrelevant whether the bag can be shoe-horned into the OH. What matters is whether it meets the published and contracted size limits which are all the sizer measures.

If everybody knows the rules and the rules are enforced as to all pax, this problem disappears. And, we all benefit.

It now takes UA 40 minutes to board a 319/320/737 at DCA. Any European carrier can accomplish that in 15-20 minutes. The major difference is that there is no tolerance on hand luggage. People board, they sit down, the aircraft departs, arrives and we're off to the races.

many bags are beyond the sizer measurements yet dont have to be shoehorned in to fit ,they slip in very smoothly w/o any problems

Me thinks UA is gonna copy Spirit in charging if the bag doesnt fit the sizer and everything is just being done as another Money grab

+1. Some discretion should be allowed here. If your rollaboard fits comfortably wheels facing in or out (not sideways), there shouldn't be an issue.
