why UA is the only US carrier flyer to China out of NYC
why UA is the only US carrier fly to China out of NYC?? Isn't NYC big enough to have non-stop flight to PVG or PEK? Plus there is huge Chinese population in NYC. are they just avoid competing with Asian Airlines???

Perhaps because in the last DOT allocations of China-USA slots only CO applied for/was awarded the route authority? China routes are regulated by treaty and there was a big to-do in the last cycle on who got what.

It has zero to do with demand. Look into landing slot allocations.

very typical of these agreements, each national selects one of their flag carriers to fly the same routing. A tit for tat.

And if EWR doesn't count as NYC ...CX does fly from JFK to HKG...
(I know CX is not US carrier...in response to your original post)

IIRC, in the past when new U.S.-China route authorities were established, only CO applied for routes in/out of EWR. CO was certainly the only U.S. carrier that won applications for routes out of NYC area.
Over the years, UA gradually got routes from SFO, ORD, and IAD. The SFO-PVG route award around 1999-2000 was particularly contentious. DL concentrated on ATL. NW's focus was on DTW, and AA's on ORD and DFW. Who can ever forget AA's disastrous application for DFW-PEK in 2006/07. AA pilots publicly said that they would refuse to fly the route should AA win, so the application was amended to become DFW-ORD-PEK. Ultimately, UA won with the "capital to capital" slogan for IAD-PEK.
