What's the difference in cargo capacity of 777 vs 747? Always thought they kept the 747 on this route for the extra cargo capacity which is where they make the real money.

747-400ER
Cargo: 5,599 cu ft (158.6 cu m) or 4,837 cu ft (137 cu m)*
* These volumes are reduced relative to the 747-400 due to the addition of one body fuel tank, basic on the -400ER, in the forward lower cargo hold.

777-200
Cargo: Total volume 5,330 cu ft (151 cu m).

EWR-HKG run 8060mi, 15:50. even in BF it felt long as heck, i'd imagine economy was painful. also if i remember right, SQ used to run a non-stop SIN-JFK which sounds like a crazy long flight.
i'm actually kind of bummed that they're going with the 777 to SYD. i do like the 777 as a plane, but the inner child in me was really hoping that they would replace the 744's with 748's. economics, load, etc. i get it, but i still think it would have been cooler to use the 748. big planes might not make economic sense, but i think they're more fun. it actually makes me sad in general to see the low adoption rate that plane is getting overall.

LAX-SYD actually isn't that far. clocks in at 7,487. i actually remember in inception they were talking about where to plan their heist, and they said LA to sydney was the longest flight in the world. i had recently flown EWR-HKG when i first saw that movie and thought, "i could have sworn it was longer..."

Clocks in at 9,525 miles (8,277 nautical miles). I believe it is still running actually. The stop date appears to be November 24, 2013.

Apparently UA feels that the extra seats are needed.

LAX-SYD barely cracks the top 30 for longest scheduled non-stop flights. Longer UA routes are EWR-HKG, EWR-BOM, and ORD-HKG.

How many 747s are returning to ORD?
UA 835 departing ORD at 10:55 for PVG
UA 881 departing ORD at 13:20 for NRT
UA 907 departing ORD at 18:25 for FRA
UA 882 from NRT, arriving ORD at 14:30
UA 906 from FRA, arriving ORD at 14:55
UA 836 from PVG, arriving ORD at 16:05
Looks like only UA 907 can use the plane coming back from FRA on the same day. UA 835 and 881 are not able to wait for planes from NRT or PVG. Can I say on a single day, we will see 5 individual 747s in and out of ORD?
How many 747s does United need to operate these 3 routes?

Is EWR capable of 744's?
Would UA ever place a 744 on any route out of EWR?
EWR has seen some nice upgrades in the EWR-FRA market recently with a sUA 772! Wonder how long that will stick, as it seems to switch back to a 764 and then to a 763 and then back to a 772 in early spring.
Also when was the last time ORD-FRA saw the 744?

ORD-LHR was also a 744 back in the Summer of 2012.
Thanks for the advice
But since it has been confirmed that they are using a sUA 777, your recommendation is better suited for the person that had issues with a sUA 777: colpuck.

Well look like PVG won't see any 772s next year.
