I think we can, actually.

The Y-fare would be on the TATL return, but the outbound would be on either a V/W-class or a Q-class on LH ex-India connecting to the UA MUC flight to EWR.

But I still am wondering whether buy-up is possible on codeshares...

The buy-up should cost a lot less, if they are offering it...

+1, but I guess it all depends on how much you value your miles...

I understand what you mean. But in plain English, you are not correct.

As a fact - only TPAC, TALT, P.S., certain HNL routes and NRT-BKK are not eligible.

A lot of international routes are in fact eligible for free upgrade.

This is a good point, CPUs are available on many international routes. But the prior sentence can in fact be read as technically accurate - international itineraries "such as" EWR-MUC (i.e., TATL itineraries) are not available for complimentary upgrade.

Although I am not flying this route on the specific itinerary mentioned, would EWR-BOM or BOM-EWR be one of these?

Any experiences on this route?

Oh my gosh no. CPUs on flights from US to Canada and latin america and some of the inter-asia routes, such as NRT-HKG. Never on a true long haul (TPAC or TATL).

Yes.

TPAC - Transpacific flight (crossing Pacific Ocean). In UA's case, your flight must cross International Date Line in order to be qualified as a TPAC.

A rare example is HNL-GUM, the only "domestic" flight that is treated as TPAC.

TATL - Transatlantic flight (crossing Atlantic Ocean).

EWR-BOM is a TATL flight.

Just to clarify, EWR-BOM is a TATL (transatlantic) route and there are no free upgrades.

Use miles...there's no copay, it's a much better deal than burning a GPU. If Z=9 then your chances of an R-bucket becoming available are very high. There's no difference in queue priority for miles versus GPU.

What the hell?

No co-pay? What are you talking about?

Unless you have a full fare, you have to pay co-pay:

http://www.united.com/web/en-US/cont...2012-03-03.pdf

The only exemption for co-pay is M+ elite on certain routes, but definitely not EWR-BOM.

GPUs are always the best option due to co-pay.

Take a look at the OP.

This is about EWR-MUC, which - according to the UA link you posted - would be 15k + no co-pay in Y class.

Wrong, in multiple respects. As SuperFlyBoy suggests, read the OP.

Sorry - misunderstand

Actually - I am correct

My wrong is misunderstanding the situation. I did point out that full-fare requires no copay.

GPUs are not always the best option. On a Y or B fare, the miles upgrade is a better deal (assuming you will otherwise use all your GPUs before they expire).
