Back to sub-80% OT rates. Curious what the other majors were at - assuming higher.

These rates appear to be calculated differently, as the numbers vary slightly from what the airlines themselves have reported. But this list provides a good overall picture of where UA stands relative to its competitors.

1 (AS) Alaska 86.88%
2 (DL) Delta 85.16%
3 (US) US Airways 81.65%
4 (WN) Southwest 78.50%
5 (UA) United 77.13%
6 (AC) Air Canada 75.45%
7 (AA) American 74.00%
8 (B6) Jetblue 71.47%

UA isn't at the bottom, but I don't see much evidence of the "reliable operation" about which Smisek keeps preaching.

Wasn't the NYC area pretty much a disaster last month? It seems reflected in the airlines that have NYC as a hub -- UA, AA, and B6. AA took a 6 percentage point drop from March. Ouch.

One answer: SFO

Don't get me wrong, UA ops is a mess, but the runway closures at SFO is making it worse.

Chicago hurt both UA and AA in April. Massive rainstorms, flooding, hundreds of cancelled flights and thousands of delayed flights.

Naw. That's so last week. What was it recently? Sequestration? And I forget what Jeff and his co-workers blamed before - Taxes? FAA? Operational reliability of inherited pmUA aircraft? Yet another superstorm? Oh, wait - that was last year. Also, not sure why other airlines can't compete in the excuses business. At least UA now owns it lock stock and barrel.

I can't wait until the sex-hungry cicadas come up...

I have no way to excuse their superior on-time performance last month.

Except that DL deliberately only delayed/cancelled their DL Connection flights out of JFK/LGA to get their mainline flights out on time.

UA might as well adopt the same strategy. those of us flying in and out of EWR on UAX would hardly know the difference since most days at least 50% of the UAX operations are delayed or canceled anyways.

IMHO the PRASM numbers are more of a concern than the operational stats.

Yeah that's low hanging fruit these days - figured I'd take the high road and start the conversation off with an industry-average data point instead

The OT% is particularly embarrassing given that SFO has had a record good year for weather -- on a normalized basis, the stats are probably even worse.

Weather has been fine, but the Sunday runway closures have been annoying.
