Seeking advice as to booking via miles or $$$.

Hello,

I hope to sort this out as soon as possible. I need to book 2 tickets for my mother and sister as they need to travel together, 11/18 thru 12/03 from ABJ to JNB. I have 35K miles and it will cost 25K for one person + $156 in taxes and that's through a partner airline.
1. I woulk like to use the remaining 10k in combination with 5K miles transferred from mother's account for $75 = 15K
2. It would cost over $438 to purchase 11K miles from United
3. If I booked a one way ticket, it would cost me $550 to buy the other way from the airline
4. Taxes on the award travel are $156 (+ 438 for the second ticket)
5.the round trip per the partner airline is over $800
6. United told me that there are only 3 seats lest on the flight but the airlines said that there are more than 100 seats available. Does United only gets a few seats?
7. I may not have enough time to apply for a cc.
Please Help.
Thanks

Welcome to Flyertalk!

Sounds like you have spelled out a variety of options. Also sounds like earning miles is not a priority.

I wouldn't transfer any miles. You lose too much in value. I would purchase the second ticket.

I agree with the above poster. I would purchase the second ticket.

As for #6, the UA agent probably meant there were only 3 award seats available, while the other agent meant there were over 100 seats for sale.

All partners get the same pool of award seats. Award seat availability may increase or decrease at any time.

Thank so much for your replies. Money is a little bit of an issue but I'll find a solution. Thanks again.
