I would suggest to move it out in 3-month buckets - and when/if there is a schedule change, you can use that opportunity to cancel with no redeposit fee.

Dang, that 'same carrier' is turning out to be tough. The original itinerary is
  • AUS to ORD on United Express (GoJet)
  • ORD to ICN on Asiana (stopover)
  • ICN to NRT on United (destination)
  • NRT to ICN to SFO on Asiana
  • SFO to AUS on United Express (Skywest)
I'm hoping that any flights (any carrier) I can find on United.com from AUS to NRT in "Saver" category will work.

No. Same carrier means same carrier.

Although UAX is regarded as UA.
