Agreed - for most "regional" flights *A is group 1 - but on UA it's supposed to be group 2.... I'm glad that LH lets me board with group 1 - but admittedly they have fewer boarding groups than UA.....

Interesting I noticed the family ahead of me last week flying SFO-LAS with their TK luggage tags attached all had G3-4 on their BP but the father scanned his BP, it rejected it and then he showed the agent his TK*G card (he was stopped putting it back in his wallet when I walked by and saw it wasn't a UA card) and the family of 5 came through with manual overrides.

Well, according to this, even UA Premier Gold is group 2: https://hub.united.com/en-us/News/Company-Operations/Pages/arriving-at-a-single-boarding-process.aspx

It's a historic glitch that was recently fixed. Can't find the thread right now where this was discussed.

Well, now that UA is on a spending-based system, a lot of people will be falling out of the Gold tier so it will hopefully get a bit better. I hit Platinum last year and it's the perfect tier for my needs.

Too bad they fixed it - I enjoyed Group 1 boarding...

As an older person, walking slowly with a cane, I appreciate preboarding, but all too frequently I have been bumped and pushed by GS passengers rushing past me down the jetway. Even when I request a wheelchair, some try to squeeze by. Not sure if that is DYKWIA or not.

Changed Seat, then Boarding Group changed

This was weird -- never had this happen to me before. Is this normal?

I Kayak these days, so no status on UA, but UA is still my primary use if possible. So when I want E+ I just pay the extra for the seat, which is what I did on my most recent flight the other day. I was assigned an E+ (paid) seat which, at the time of booking was the last one left on a window and boarding group 3. About 20-30 mins before boarding, I kept an eye on the seat list to look for an aisle to open up. Sure enough, as soon as one did I had the GA switch me to the aisle seat

**side note -- tried the app for the simple seat change but it would not recognize the fact that I had already paid the up-charge, and wanted me to purchase the new seat at full price...i know for a fact there was no price difference for the two seats I was dealing with -- app fail**

GA switched me to the new seat no problem, then when my BP refreshed in the app, I also noticed my boarding group had changed to group 5.

I had never seen a seat change in the same cabin section result in a Boarding Group change...I don.t really care, but just thought it was odd and curious why that would happen.

Totally normal.

Non-elite/non-credit card customers are assigned boarding groups by seat position:
Window: Group 3
Middle: Group 4
Aisle: Group 5

By design. You get the refund after the fact for the one not used.

Why would it, by design, try charging you again?
