I can't say it's a criticism, just an observation. Odds are based on aircraft numbers and these swaps you're more likely to be on a 738 when flying on UA than any other aircraft.
Must be a west coast thing. Most of my BOS-EWR flights start out as a 738, and usually get swapped to a 739.

So logged into United this morning to find a "Schedule Change" noted in my EWR to AUA trip for Jan 2017. Then I noticed my seats were also reassigned...

I was booked in row 14 (departing) row 12 (return) and was automatically moved to rows 22 & 24 on the strangely new seat map that still says 737-900.

Anybody seen this map before? It doesn't match to any of the United 737-900's online. Note only 38 rows, and rows 12 / 20 meet each other, no row 15.

I see this all the time - usually 48-0 hours before departure it morphs into version 1 or 2 (i.e. additional rows appear then). I'm not sure if I usually see 12DEF blocked, but other than that this seems quite familiar.

Makes sense I guess, they could use either 739 version 1/2 to add rows 14 / 15 / 39 as needed and everyone else would stay the same.

THIS! I fly 737-800s about 2-4x per month. About 1/2 the time, one of the seats in front of me has this weird issue where the right side of the seat is about 2-3 inches more reclined than the left. Can't be comfortable for the passenger in that seat. And it increases the recline on one side so that their seat intrudes on my space far more than usual.

Yep - standard placeholder. 12DEF are blocked so that it's impossible to be assigned a seat that is of ambiguous existence or E+ status depending on 739 config. Rather ironic that you got kicked out of row 14 to make room for swapping this map in though...

Any recommendations on First seats that are better or worse than others on UA B739?

I don't generally choose the bulkhead, but others all pretty close to equivalent. Service goes front to back, if that may be a consideration for you.

Thanks. I have 2E,F on 4 upcoming segments for myself and Mrs Wooglin. Just looking for validation that there wasn't a good reason not to have picked them

Feedback on "steerage class" for 737-900?

Yes, I don't have any status, so I'm forced to fly in the back of the plane. Has anybody flown standard economy on one of the "new" 737-900 aircraft? If so, how bad was it? Is the seat pitch that much worse than regular 737s or A319/320s? I know that there's no in-flight entertainment, so I'm prepared for that much.

FWIW - many 739s do have IFE (in the form of DirecTV) and I believe all dark ones have streaming PDE which I actually prefer since it's usually free and has better options than DirecTV (unless there's a specific game or something that you need the TV to watch)

UA's steerage is not any better or worse than others in terms of legroom. The 737 is narrower than the equivalent Airbus so you will be slightly squashed. The Buy on Board food is surprisingly good but the FAs can be surprisingly hostile. If you get Personal Device Entertainment and have a laptop or iPad, then you are in luck.
