It has been reported that the compensation, via Electronic Travel Certificate, rules/schedule for passengers downgraded from F to Y are in SHARES system at: GG OVS DOWNGRADE
Agent could also search for "FRONT CBN OVERSALE"

1001-2000 miles $250
2001-3000 miles $500
3001-4000 miles $750 (was $1000)
4000-5000 miles $1000
5001+ miles $1,500
PLUS a refund of the miles/money/instrument used for upgrading, or if revenue, the fare difference between the fare paid and the lowest published fare available on the date of purchase.
The above applies only to day of departure downgrades.

parents got downgraded from BF to E+ due to crew rest, IAD->NRT today. BF cabin was full and they were selected. dad is Silver and mom is non-status. GPU supported upgrades on Q fare if I am recalling correctly. both are being provided with 1500 TCV. am also asking that they get UA club access at NRT while waiting for onward journey to HKG.
disappointing because this was supposed to be their first time in C TPAC, but is this fair comp? they do get BF on the way back, but I may flip out if they get downgraded again on the return!

I was downgraded on UA32 (LAX-NRT, W-Fare using GPU) earlier this week. I was already settled in my BusinessFirst seat when a gate agent had a not-so-lovely surprise for me. I was moved to EconomyPlus and offered no compensation at all. I should have asked for something on the spot, but I was so shocked by what happened and the flippant attitude of the gate agent.
Thankfully, the flight crew knew something was up (I was angry for the first three hours of the flight) and made sure to connect me with an NRT gate agent. The NRT agent gave me a $1,500 voucher. The make-good is nice, but the whole situation is another reason I've lost faith in United.

Why'd you volunteer to leave your seat?

I didn't. The gate agent came on the airplane and asked to see my boarding pass. I didn't think anything of it at the time (in retrospect, I should have asked, "Why?") and she quickly gave me a coach boarding pass.

I was upgraded to F Class on the domestic leg of a TATL flight about 72 hours out. I learned this when I checked in and printed my boarding pass at 23 hours, 50 minutes out. When I show up at the gate and scan my boarding pass, it beeps ERROR. Turns out United's system decided to "de-check me in" and, in turn, upgraded someone else to F class to the same seat. Fortunately there was one seat left on the plane so I wouldn't miss the connection to the intl flight. Unfortunately it was a middle seat in E (not even E+). Not a fun 5 hours.
The gate agent was awesome (wish I got her name so I could send a kudos to the powers-that-be) and tried to give me as much compensation as possible. The system only allowed $300.

my wife and i were on award reservation (miles out of my 1k account) flying UA896 SIN-HKG on dec 10. since i had chase explorer card, she managed to CPU to BF cabin. at t-20 United cancelled the flight. got rebooked onto a later SQ flight in economy (no biz seat avail). i used the customer care web form to ask for compensation, was told GG OVS DOWNGRADE was only for downgrade due to oversold situation, and declined to provide any compensation. surprising to me they wouldnt offer anything, as in the past they would offer some miles to my minor complaints.
can anyone comment if i am due compensation in this situation? and how should i proceed from here? thanks in advance.

A month ago I was flying SFO-LAX-LHR on an A319. GPU cleared LAX-LHR, waitlisted SFO-LAX. F sold out for several weeks. A few days before the flight the seat map swaps to A320 and my upgrade clears. I picked 3A. The day of the flight it swaps back to 319 and my seat is gone; upon check-in I get 7A. Before the door closes the GA comes on and hands me a $200 e-cert with profuse apologies.

International BF downgrade to E-
I put this in the compensation thread yesterday but I'm not sure anyone even saw it there buried on page 101 or so . So I thought I'd try a separate thread to see if anyone has any thoughts on this...
Need some advice relative to compensation. I'll try to keep the story short.
My dad is 70 and lives in New York and has some back problems. He lives in New York and was flying to Germany, so I paid the extra fare to get him a W fare so I could use a GPU to get him into Business First. The flight was carefully selected to be both direct and had upgrade space on booking (amazing). The upgrade was confirmed months ago.
He shows up at Newark last week and the agents tell him they have no record of him in the system (this is my Dad's version of the story; everything was visible on united.com). Long story short, they eventually find him a seat in E- and let him on board. They give him a $1000 ecert for his downgrade from Business First to Economy.
Question: Is this the normal amount of compensation he should be receiving for a downgrade of a confirmed (yes it was confirmed; we have the records) seat in Business First to Economy on an international (transatlantic) flight?
Thanks for any advice!

I have been downgraded many times in the past and usually received a combination of upgrade instruments and ecerts.
Are you saying that the website still showed him upgraded at 24 hours and that this was a gate downgrade?

1. The only compensation due is the fare difference between paid & flown. Here, that is the GPU and that presumably has been or will be returned.
2. As a standardized CS gesture, UA also provides a cert as set forth above. That's not compensation. It's meant to take some of the sting out.
Bottom line is that it's a pretty fair system and it's pretty uniform.

Sorry to hear about your dad's experience. Hard for us to say what actually happened here, but always a bummer to see a confirmed upgrade vanish. Sounds like a textbook overbooking / involuntary downgrade scenario.
You might be able to glean some more insight into what happened by taking a look at his reservation and e-ticket, but, dunno. Did your dad have an assigned seat? (Was it by any chance an aisle seat near the front of the aircraft?… No reason.)
It's possible that he could also have been re-routed in J or F on another flight if he had asked at check-in//the gate. Agents are often pretty flexible with folks who know their options.
Probably a $1000 e-cert for the downgrade is the best you're gonna do. Maybe also an apology if you as nicely. It would be pretty hilarious to see UA take a liberal interpretation of rule 261/2004 downgrade obligations and return 75% of the GPU.
