2012 Let's Eat - International First, BusinessFirst, & Business Class

For the record, Express Dine is now called Executive Dining and is available right after take off. ^ Double ^ when you consider the scarcity of food in the United Club here at EWR or elsewhere.

IAH-BOG
UA 1099
23:59-5:24
Boeing 737-700
Dinner

Pre-Dinner snack, not as nice as the ones we enjoy on intra USA F flights

Choices were Salmon or Beef with Shrimp. Me no likey fish.

Meal... A bit of a mess...

Steak covered in Shrooms, which I gladly swiped off with a flick of my fork. The shrimp, while tasty, was cooked in the steak juice so it was kind of mushy. Maybe it would be a good idea to put the shrimps in a skewer as an appetizer or something?

Salad

Dessert. Pretty good, but not very filling. It was a red-eye flight anyway.

BOG-IAH
UA 1006
00:14-5:24
Boeing 737-700
Dinner

This dinner was more substantial than the outbound flight, thanks to a full sized chicken breast. However, it is almost impossible to properly reheat a full steak and chicken concurrently on the same plate. End result, continue and find out

Choices were the same, just slightly different... Salmon or Beef with Chicken.

And voila....

The steak was totally undercooked... I was starving so I ate it, but I know people will start hearing imaginary mooing noises [as if the steak is still alive] when they see the steak. I got sick about 3 days later and could not for the life of me figure out the source. Maybe it was that steak.

Overall, I was expecting IAH-BOG-IAH to be a small step up from the usual intra USA F flights, but it wasn't

This is from my SFO-FRA flight on 7/30. The menu probably has changed by now, but posting it anyway for those curious and/or if the dishes make a return sometime in the future!

Excellent service on this flight from the flight attendants.

BusinessFirst SFO-FRA 777-200 (Unreconfigured)

I feel like the new glasses hold less liquid than the former UA glasses.

TO BEGIN

Chilled Appetizer

Fresh Seasonal Greens
Tomatoes, cucumbers and croutons
with your choice of buttermilk ranch
or classic Caesar dressing

The "chilled appetizer" turned out to be smoked salmon wrapped around a cube of another type of smoke fish (which was quite hard). Served with what I believe to be a wasabi mayo. (Why isn't this printed in the menu? Does it really vary so much from flight to flight even on the same route? The menu does have the little "SFO-FRA" printed in the lower right corner.) Salad was nice and croutons added afterwards by flight attendant from a silver dish, which was a nice touch. I wish there was a non-creamy salad dressing option, like a vinaigrette, as I find ranch and Caesar too similar. Love the pretzel rolls!

MAIN COURSE

Grilled Pork Chop
Green peppercorn sauce, shiitake mushroom bread pudding,
white asparagus and broccolini

A bit dry, but impressed to find a bone-in piece of meat on a plane. Shiitake mushroom bread pudding was great.

Osso Bucco-style Breast of Chicken
Chanterelle mushroom ragout, garlic polenta cake and broccolini

San Francisco-style Cioppino
Seared hake and grilled shrimp in tomato-seafood sauce
with mixed vegetables

Spinach Cannelloni
Four-cheese sauce and roasted tomatoes with Parmesan cheese

Executive Dining

If you prefer more time to work or relax, ask a flight attendant about our
expedited dining service. At your request, we will present your main meal
followed by dessert based on your schedule.

TO FINISH

International Cheese Selection
Grapes and crackers served with Noval Fine Ruby Port

These came around pre-plated. I love goat cheese and brie so can't go wrong there.

Dessert
Ice cream with your choce of toppings

I love the nuts for the sundaes - very fresh tasting.

MID-FLIGHT SNACK

Assorted Sandwiches
Sun-dried tomato and basil tortilla wrap
with turkey and cheddar

Hummus and pepper jack cheese

Fruit and light snacks are available at any time following the meal service.
Please help yourself or ask a flight attendant for today's selections.

Wrap was decent, while the orange was one of the juiciest I've ever had. Had to ask the flight attendant to serve these to me as I was trapped in my window seat with my neighbor and two in front of me all reclined.

PRIOR TO ARRIVAL

Herbed Scrambled Eggs
Potato gratin and turkey sausage

A bit funny to be served breakfast and then land in FRA at 3pm. The potato gratin was really nice, a bit tangy. Cinnamon roll was indulgent - my first time having it! The fruit did not taste fresh. They were nearly frozen cubes, and had the rounded edges which make them look like they were handled a bit before being loaded on the plane. A bite of yogurt tasted like the same as the yogurt on pmUA, i.e. not natural-tasting, only now served in a dish rather than in the plastic cup as before.

Chilled Deli Selection
Swiss cheese, Black Forest ham, Genoa salami and turkey

Cereal and Banana
Served with milk

Breakfast breads with butter and fruit preserves

My wife and I are flying IAD to FCO in two weeks in business and was wondering what food options should I expect.

Should we eat before the flight?

I have seen some posts on here and the food is decent and others not so much, but that is with everything.

Also, what about the FA? I am assuming they will be experienced and hopefully not a nightmare....

FC meal IAH-LIM

Didn't know where to post it since it's an int'l route featuring a domestic FC meal.
Can anyone share his/her experience on the meal served on that 6.5 hours flight?

Thanks,
R

UA201 HNL-GUM J Sept 2012

Posting here since the menu/service more closely matched an international flight. Excellent service - the best I've experienced on UA in years! Just a shame this 8hr flight featured a domestic F seat yet required a GPU. I don't understand why they don't treat HNL-GUM like the the longer US-HNL flights (EWR/IAD/IAH-HNL) which require only a RPU (and feature better seats!)

Note: the menu didn't exactly match what was served - but it was close (see salad and steak).

UA201 HNL-GUM J Sept 2012

Lunch

To Begin

Fresh Seasonal Greens with Chilled Scallops (actual salad served had mozzarella balls and large chunks of lobster instead of scallops - and was probably the best in-flight salad I've had in a decade on any airline!)
Tomatoes, Kalamata olives, and Parmesan cheese with your choice of Parmesan-pepper dressing or roasted garlic red wine vinaigrette

Main Course

Wasabi-crusted Filet Mignon (actual steak had a mango barbeque sauce and green beans)
Thyme jus, Macadamia nut mashed potatoes, and baby carrots

Mongolian-style Shredded Chicken
Asian-style sesame noodles and grilled vegetables

Sauteed Scallops and Prawns
Thai red curry sauce, basil-scented jasmine rice, and sauteed vegetables

Stir-fried Rice with Vegetables
Egg fried rice, vegetables and mushrooms in ginger soy sauce

To Finish

International Cheese Selection
Grapes and crakers with Noval Fine Ruby Port

Dessert
Ice cream with your choice of toppings

Mid-Flight Snack

Fruit and light snacks are available any time following the meal service

Prior to Arrival

Smoked Turkey and Pepperjack Cheese on Ciabatta
Fruit appetizer, mushroom salad and sweet treat

Wine List

Champagne
Paul Dangin Brut NV, Champagne (served)
or
Pannier Tradition AOP Brut NV, Champagne

White Wine
Burgans Albarino 2009, Rias Baixas, Span
Kunde Estate-Bottled Chardonnay 2010, Sonoma Valley

Red Wine

UA183 GUM-MNL J Sept 2012

UA183 GUM-MNL J Sept 2012

Standard domestic-F styled food (plus garlic bread and a coconut pudding dessert) and a ex-Air Mike crew who provided genuinely warm service to me but were openly hostile to others seated nearby in J.

Thanks for the posting the menus, FlyerBeek! ^
Have been wondering & asking about it for months.
Nice to know, that the catering at least somewhat resembles international longdistance standards. Hopefully the hard product will follow. Incidentially, what plane was this on?

How was your steak cooked? I see reports ranging from still moo'ing in the middle to well done shoe leather.

Thanks for the pix and update. Did you have bottled water at your seat when you boarded or did they hand it out after departure?

The steak was cooked medium-well and was actually quite edible (although I was looking forward to the wasabi-crust). I was seated in 2J and had a pretty good view of the starboard galley - it was clear that the galley FA was taking great care in the plating and presentation of each dish. The meal service itself was very relaxed, taking about two and a half hours to complete.

As best I can remember there was no individually bottled water offered at any time, but the FAs made frequent runs through the cabin refilling water.

Appetizer - Shrimp wrapped in salmon, no 2nd choice

Salad

Main - Tamale-filled Breast of Chicken

Skipped Cheese

Sundae

Pre-arrival cold cuts

Another average UA flight. I have tried all 4 main options for the month of August, and found the chicken to be the best.

Another thing, there are no more hot towel before pre-arrival snack? Thought they use to do 2 hot towel rounds...

Excellent Business Class meal LHR->SFO 9/12

Just a quick note to let people know that the mixed seafood main course was excellent - restaurant quality for sure (it had a fancy Italian name that I can't recall

I'm happy that the international meals have been vastly improved since June 1.
