Turkey Trip [ex-UK]

Just booked a very cheap trip for me and the Mrs to go to Istanbul on a city break flying business class BA and staying in a 4* hotel ! Very cheap indeed for so many tier points.

I live in London and am English with U.K. Passport. Mrs lives with me Swedish with Swedish passport.

Turkish website says I need to get a Visa, but she does not?

Is this true? Why on earth can this be the case ?

Do they hate the English over there ?

It seems accurate. Different countries have different relationships. Sometimes it's a political thing and sometimes a money thing. Other reasons exist too but those are the two big ones.
UK passport holders qualify for an e-visa. www.evisa.gov.tr

I'm amazed that you've gone direct to "hate" as a reason that UK citizens need a visa for Turkey, however tongue in cheek you meant it.

The UK charges Turkish citizens £89 for the privilege of spending their money in the UK. Plus £59 if an interview is required.

This will be the reason. UK will be trying to stop Turkish citizens staying (unlawfully) in UK.
Will be more Turks wanting to stay in UK than UK people wanting to stay in Turkey
So the visa requirement becomes reciprocal. They do it --> we do it.

Seems mad though Turkey is not in EU

Swedes have EU passport
Brits have EU passport - Same !

So why one should have to pay to get in Turkey and not the other ??

Visa requirements are usually reciprocal. They do it --> we do it. This is not unusual
If UK stopped requiring Turks to have a visa to enter UK, would expect Turkey to do the same for UK citizens

The last time I went to Istanbul, I was able to get the Turkish Visa right upon arrival in the Istanbul airport. Signs directing me. It amounted to handing over money and getting a stamp in passport. $20-US.

Do check on-line for current information, but I've seen no indication it has changed.

And have a wonderful time. An amazing city. Fresh fish sandwiches on the waterfront, a short boat ride to actually also get to Asia, ... too many adventures to type.

When I went to Istanbul it was an e-visa done online beforehand.

also BA Business Class got you fasttrack immigration which saves quite a bit of time at the airport

Enjoy Istanbul - a fantastic place. Just a shame you are flying BA Biz rather than TK - TK has the most amazing lounge in IST and, of course, its food is streets ahead, even after its recent cuts. And, not to mention the seats on-board....!

+1 to all of that.

The e-visa scheme is actually an improvement. Used to be you had to queue in an interminable line when you got there to get the visa.
