I, personally, enjoy a really old and mostly ruins medieval castle/fortress to a renovated/restored palace. I found the castles in Wales to be amazing. All were amazing - starting with Cardiff castle, Caerphilly, Chepstow. And not a castle, but the Tintern Abbey ruins as well.
And, of course, Tower of London.

Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck (not really an island) is a good ruined castle
LOTS to do with the family around there as well - steam trains, jurassic coast, lovely beaches

A favourite of mine is Dover Castle. There is also the added history of the tunnels underneath which were used in WWII and the Napolenic wars.
What I also liked is because the focus is on the underground tours the above ground was pretty much left for you to wander around on your own.

To anyone looking for a seaside break spot, do consider Swanage. ^

I happen to be in Swanage today for the first time and must say it's a lovely place. The railway line and station are great and the seafront is charming too. I won't have time to go in Corfe Castle but hope to get the train tomorrow and see it from there.

Castle Acre in Norfolk near Kings Lynn has both a (very) ruined castle and a (less) ruined priory, as well as a village with a pub and so on. Nice to visit if you're in the area.

St Michael's Mount is always a favourite of mine. As is Newcastle Castle Keep!
It really depends what you want. Ruins, shell, left-as-was, reconstructed from antiques, Disneyfied, urban, rural...

Also, FYI, if your credit card company offers travel related rewards, you may be able to get tickets that way. We did.
Also saw Kenilworth. Neither of us were impressed with it.

re Windsor please note that parts of the castle (and sometimes all of it) are closed for various state and semi state ocassions throughout the year so check the website before making plans.
I'd suggest Bamburgh and Lindisfarne Castles in Northumberland - both popular film locations.
A friend recommends Kenilworth Castle. Her sons (@15 years old) still love going there.

Yes, there are castles everywhere up here near ABZ.
Most famously the very photographed postcard ruin of Dunnottar on the coast near Stonehaven - but also Fyvie, Fraser, Drum, Craigievar, Crathes , Balmoral where the Queen comes to stay and many others.
But I wouldn't recommend coming to Aberdeen just to see a castle. There'll be something good near wherever you're going to be.
