I suggest you ask the RAC or the AA. The Highways Agency probably has advice on its website as well.

This is FLYertalk, the dead giveaway is in the first three letters. Welcome nonetheless and please continue to post here for flying-related discussion.

Welcome to Flyertalk John Mcentee

As this isn't specific to air travel, we'll move this to our UK/Ireland destinations forum for now.

Keep checking the news. If Operation Stack is in place, your only viable route will be the A2/M2, although you may be able to use the A249, depending on the extent of the queues.

Why not avoid the whole mess of Dover/Calais and travel from Newhaven to Dieppe instead ?

Or even Harwich to Hook of Holland overnight, if you're headed that way...

(I do enjoy that journey!)

Erm sorry but you're wrong. We post on all manners of travel here, and as far as I'm concerned the OP is welcome to query any of them.

Now this thread is in a destination forum, it's in the right place, as this is where we talk about the UK & Ireland, and anything to do with it. This encompasses any form of transport, from an A380 to roller skates.

John Mcentee, you are very welcome to Flyertalk and this forum.

If anybody wishes to discuss what is and isn't allowed, please feel free to PM me, or any of the senior moderators, should it be site-wide. Let's leave this thread to discuss the issue at hand - and that's how to get to Dover, and the alternatives.

Ok, fair enough, perhaps I was a bit harsh and flippant, which is usually not my way. I just think that there is a wealth of good information out there, in particular here:

http://www.eurotunnel.com/uk/traveller-info/latest/

Which is easily accessible and probably the most accurate guidance out there.

Google Maps live traffic is a good source of information too, particularly on how alternative routes are affected by the additional traffic.

Actually, the A2 approach into Dover, curving down from up high, is pretty impressive in its own right. I actually rather miss this, as it used to be part of any cross-channel journey for me!

(Well, apart from those that went through Dover Marine station...)

You are correct - it is absolutely excellent. I don't know how they do it.

Massive data feed consolidation, basically.

It's not 100% in every area, but it's saved me hours of my life...
