Car hire UK to Ireland [moved from Travel News]

Hi anyone had any experience hiring a car in the UK " mainland" and taking it to Ireland for a short trip? Any problems and which company's accept this?

Are you talking about taking it across on the ferry? You probably should contact the car hire company directly and see what they say.

It's a bit of a faff - see this FAQ from Hertz.

Also, see this page from the UK government and this page from the RAC (a UK motoring organisation) regarding the need for form VE103, and how to obtain it.

You'll face an expensive ferry fee and expensive (compulsory) additional insurance charges from the hire company. Can't see any point in doing it - just fly across, or "sail-rail" and hire again in Ireland.

I've rented from UK (Northern Ireland) and taken it into Ireland, both one-way and roundtrip before with no problems, but double check the rental agreement first.

Renting from Northern Ireland and taking a car into the Republic and doing what the OP wants to do are significantly different.

Flights from the UK Mainland to Ireland are so plentiful and pretty cheap - unless you are visiting North/West Wales, Liverpool or SW Scotland, you may find it much easier to fly and rent locally.
