Jessops do have some good offers from time to time, but I don't really rate them that highly, personally.
In London, I like CameraWorld, who have supplied me with far too many filters for my own good, based in the West End (with a good online presence, too). Locally to me, I use Digital Depot, based in Old Stevenage (got a great deal on a Manfrotto from them too), but again, they do good online stuff.
For second-hand or quirky stuff (and medium/large format), there is a little camera district (complete with photographers' café!) near the British Museum - centred around Bury Place. Nearby is the hit-and-miss (but huge) Jacobs, on New Oxford Street, opposite the flagsip Jessops shop.
If you want a real pro shop (and to be terrified by the equipment and prices), have a look in Calumet on Drummond St, at the back of Euston (and while you're there, stop into one of the many excellent Bhel Puri houses on the street...)
Finally, as a photographer, I'd thoroughly recommend the Photographers' Gallery - one of my favourite London galleries. There's also some good exhibitions on at the National Portrait Gallery, and the always inspirational Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is still on at the Natural History Museum (having said that, you pay £9 to get in there, and it's on tour for free elsewhere in the country - I recently saw it at the NHM's 'stuffed animal house' in Tring, which was excellent, if a little bizarre...)
