It also shows where stations really are which is useful to people who use the Tube to get between Leicester Square & Covent Garden or who go to Regents Park in order to get to London Zoo or who go to Notting Hill Gate from Paddington in order to get to Lancaster Gate

Indeed. I had no idea there were so many trains under London at any one time.
A few months ago I found the "live departures boards" site:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravel...partureboards/
which fits quite nicely with this little map.

The Live Departures app on my iPhone is invaluable. It tells me in the morning whether I need to
* Hustle through Victoria (train in 4 mins)
* Saunter (5-6 mins)
* Enough time for coffee (7-9)
* Get a cab (10 or over)
The National Rail live arrivals/departures is equally useful. ^

that is really cool....and indeed mesmorizing....
Yes, "Live Departures" is a godsend.
Much like the hustle/saunter/coffee/cab scale, living only a few minutes walk from my tube station, it tells me what I have time for before I have to leave, from having plenty of time for a cuppa, or "oh crap, you really needed to be on that train a few minutes ago" to "change pages to TFL Journey Planner to find the alternate route"....

Just a pitty it is running on a non standard port and blocked to plenty of people while they are behind corporate firewalls.
[Ok it's only a slightly non standard port, but plenty of places will have almost everything blocked.]

I stumbled onto a similar site for Helsinki last year when I was there. It was useful in learning the flow of the routes before setting out on the journey (especially the first one).

It's amazing how watching some dots move along a line can be so engrossing.
This has now been added to my collection of "watching dots move" which includes http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/ as well as http://www.flightradar24.com/
