American Assures TWA Aviators Members of Even Greater Value From AAdvantage

American Airlines today assured members of TWA's Aviators® frequent flyer program that their mileage balances will have even greater value as part of American's expansive AAdvantage mileage rewards program once all necessary approvals have been obtained. Until that occurs, American's top marketing executive encouraged TWA customers to continue building their Aviators portfolios with miles as they fly in the days and weeks ahead.

``Once we have the necessary court and governmental approvals to proceed, Aviators members will receive AAdvantage miles for the full balances in their TWA portfolios,'' said Mike Gunn, American's executive vice president -- marketing and planning. ``Then they will have access to the wide array of destinations served by AA and its global airline partners -- as well as a number of unique redemption features available only through AAdvantage.''

Well thats good, didn't like the idea of losing a half million miles or having them devalued in some way! Now if American Airlines doesn't get the boot from British Airways from ONEWORLD we will be in great shape http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

While AA noyed that the miles are "safe," some relatively serious questions remain regarding potential conversion process, status of Aviators Elite, deadlines for redeeming under the current Aviators Awards chart- but again, Aviators members can at least be assured that the actual accrued miles will be safe. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

"American Airlines has put forward a fairly priced package that calls for TWA to be integrated into American. This will provide continued opportunity for TWA's employees, a continued hub operation in St. Louis, and protection for the retirement benefits of TWA's employees. Furthermore, American is providing TWA with $200 million in debtor-in-possession financing to allow TWA to continue operating until our transaction is completed. Without that financing, TWA would have been forced to shutdown.

"We are confident that when the bankruptcy court weighs all of the alternatives, it will see American's bid as the superior proposal," the statement concluded.

Starting today, members of American's AADVANTAGE program will be able to earn miles for each flight on TWA, the two carriers said. TWA customers not already members are invited to join the AADVANTAGE program.

American Airlines Inc. announced today that, as part of a bid submitted yesterday to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the District of Delaware, it plans to offer all Trans World Airlines Inc. Aviators members membership in the American Airlines AAdvantage program. Under the proposal, if American is the successful bidder for TWA, it is anticipated that TWA would give Aviators members six months notice before ending the Aviators program. Aviators members would then receive full credit for unused mileage balances in their Aviators portfolio when the Aviators program ends.

The question remains: What about Status level? Also, if TW miles become only Bonus miles on AA, will Avaiator members need to requalify from scratch (2001 actual miles not counting as AA actual miles)? I noted the "transfer of miles" statement implys they will go into AA as Bonus miles.

"Q: What would happen to Aviators members’ accumulated mileage?

Pending court and regulatory approvals, Aviators members would be notified before the program ends. However, when the Aviators program ends, Aviators members would receive a bonus mileage posting in their new or existing AAdvantage account equal to the unused ending mileage balance in their Aviators portfolio."

Q: What would happen to Aviators Privilege Card Members status? Would their elite status be matched in the AAdvantage program?

It looks like privilege status of some type will transfer to AA. But miles moved at Bonus miles, probably not count toward 2002 status. So - better try to get to as high a privilege while TWA still flying and HOPE that AA will give you that equivalent level through 2002 when takeover is effective. i.e. If takeover effective on 1 June, better get to a priv. level by then.

From AA Q & A:

Aviators privilege card members would continue to receive privilege card benefits in the Aviators program. At the present time, American does not have the details on how a member?s Aviators privilege card membership would affect their AAdvantage membership after integration. However, American is committed to communicating directly to all Aviators members as soon as these details are worked out and after all necessary approvals are obtained

AA frequent-flier members can use their miles on TWA, but TWA customers will have to wait before receiving reciprocal treatment.
A spokesman for American, which completed its purchase of Trans World Airlines Inc. this week, said the carrier won't allow TWA miles to be used on American until a court approves a merger of the two frequent-flier programs.

Six months after approval is granted, TWA frequent-flier members -- along with their accumulated miles -- will be switched automatically to American's AAdvantage program, said American spokesman Marty Heires.

``Ultimately, we're going to want them to be in the AAdvantage program,'' Heires said of the TWA members. http://biz.yahoo.com/apf/010411/american_flier.html

In January, shortly after the TWA purchase was announced, American assured members of TWA's Aviators program that their mileage balances would be protected. The airline also said it would allow reciprocal use of the two carriers' airport-lounge clubs.
