Chances of free upgrade if Star Alliance Gold
Hi
I am flying BKK to Ist and am Star alliance gold with Thai airlines.
What are the chances of me getting a free upgrade or even a very cheap upgrade?
I am flying with my dad who has no status

Two people? Not happening unless Economy is substantially oversold and you get very very lucky to find no TK elites on your flight.
(BKK is unlikely to ever be oversold, it's one of the cheapest destinations in Asia because of all the competition)

Paid Upgrades is a better option for you. So you are flying TK from BKK to IST and you are a TG Gold. Pay at the airport and upgrade.
Approximately 800 Euros

One thing is being told that you were upgraded (it wouldn't be the first time that an agent pretended that an emergency exit row or a higher floor room was an "upgrade") or that due to aircraft type you actually sat in a PE-style seat (I've been in a Lufty F seat on a J ticket because F wasn't sold but the aircraft hadn't been updated).
It's quite another thing to be formally upgraded to a cabin that is no longer sold...

Well, the very last PY cabins were removed from TK planes in early 2016. So perhaps "last year" was January 2016. And perhaps at such a time, a plane still had the cabin installed but the class was no longer sold, making it possible that Elites would be upgraded to these unsold seats.
