I for one would welcome this. I am sure Boeing is offering up a rather sweet deal on them to keep the line in production for when companies look at A380/744/777 series replacements over the next few years before the 77X comes into play.
I feel the 747-8i gives a great ride outside of the craptastic LH Y seats. Sadly it doesn't have the legs for IST-SYD as that would be an interesting twist for a single connection from the UK with a short-haul to a longhaul instead of a medium/long haul to a longhaul.

Oh please, "can't handle" or rather, HAVE NOT MANAGED to certify?
The taxiways were redone less than a year ago, at the same time as the new gates and IST can handle ICAO F, they just have not been certified for it yet, as no one yet has wanted to fly A380's or 748's into IST.
It is a chicken and egg thing.

An additional considering if the A380 secondary market vs the 747-8i secondary market. The secondary market for A380s is pretty much stagnant if not already super saturated. 747s have a cargo appeal after conversion from passenger to cargo setup. So if even a 10-20 year life with TK they could potentially sell them off to a cargo company like so many 744s.

Article states they are not interested in the 747-8. There goes that pipe dream.
